Why is ODB rated so highly? I don't get it...she has the build of a man...acts like a man who only drinks Caffine infused alcohol...and dresses like she's always going to a bachelor party as a stripper. she's decent in the ring but Kim is A LOT better in that department, amongst others

Re: Women in Pro Wrestling

It depends how you look at it.. WWE use the women for one thing these days and that's ratings, Even TNA has been getting the best ratings when the women have been on.

The Indy's have some great women wrestlers the likes of Sara Del Ray, Daizee Haze and Rain are great wrestlers that can get it done in the ring.

Then there gals like Lacey, Allison Danger and others who are superb managers. A manager role is a great place for the women in today's wrestling world and we have seen this in TNA and WWE, for eg. Traci Brooks, Christy Hemme and Jackie Moore. All but one of these women have failed in the wrestling part but made up in the manager part. Jackie can get it done when needed and is a bad ass .

so what do i think of women in the wrestling world ? i think there needed, for ratings, Managers and good wrestlers..

Re: Women in Pro Wrestling

I think a girl like Mickie James, Gail Kim, or Trish Stratus is where's it at.. I'm no fan of divas/knockouts who cannot perform the simplest of tasks in or out of the ring, but when a chick is HOT.. and can perform in promos and matches.. that's what is needed to generate these ratings and make women's wresting grow.. they can be looked up to as role models for young girls.

Either that, or a girl like Awesome Kong who is just freaky with what she can do and hold her own with the men..

Re: Women in Pro Wrestling

I hate womens wrestling. It's a real "change the channel" moment for me.

The absolute only womens matches I've ever enjoyed are the Awesome Kong-Gail Kim ones over the last six months or whatever.

Even if it's Kong or Kim against someone else (say ODB or Roxxi or whoever) I then revert back to disliking it.

Just something clicks and is awesome between those two.

And that is all.

Re: Women in Pro Wrestling

I know this topic have not been getting any replys recently, but as a female wrestling fan I have to add my input.

I think the problem with WWE is they really don't have any respect for women at all. The way women are portrayed on WWE and TNA are totally different and discouraging for the hardworking female wrestlers that bust that butts to learn their craft, only to see an escort, a playboy playmate, and/or a stripper take their spots.

I mean come on. The length that these women have to go to keep their jobs is sickening. We talk about Trish Stratus, but believe it or not that lady their bust her ass to get to this point of her career, and deserves mad respect from everyone. In a recent interview on a TV show, I don't remember which one, but she stated how she didn't like the way she was being portrayed, so she trained hard and the rest is history.

WWE has the money and potential to make women wrestling just as respectful as the men, but they choose not to. TNA would probably have done the same, but thank God for Dixie Carter, a powerful female in the wrestling business. If a small TNA can make their Knockout division good, imagine what the WWE could do, but choose not to.

That's IT

Re: Women in Pro Wrestling

The main problem with women wrestling is that there's never been any serious heroes in the WWE who has went on to World Wide Fame. If you look at Japanese women wrestling, they had some of those figures in The Crush Girls. Who did America really have that transcended wrestling into the mainstream like Andre or Jesse Ventura did?

All American wrestling is influenced by the WWE. If they project women wrestling as a worthy thing, then other companies will follow. However, when has the WWE ever did that? The closest they really ever came was with Wendy Ritcher in the mid 80's. Ritcher was able to get some national exposure with Cindi Lauper. However, before the end of 1985, she was gone and women wrestling was just another random match in the WWF. By the the turn of the decade, the WWF just decided to do away with the women division all together. Time passes and women still aren't able to prove their importance. Finally, in 1994, the WWE signs Madusa to bring back the women division. She has a couple of good feuds against Bull Nakano and the very beginning of the Aja Kong feud. However, her main feud was against Bertha Faye. That just made the women division look like a gimmick division. Once Madusa leaves for WCW, the WWF once again goes without the division. In between 1995 and 1998 when the title was brought back, the divas were created. With the likes of Sunny, Marlena and Sable, no longer are women seen as anything other than T&A. To no surprise, once the division is brought back, it's pretty much a T&A title.

In one boom period, you had a solid and respectable main woman in Wendy Ritcher. Suddenly, in the Attitude era, the main women are just T&A. The only woman who was somewhat of a role model was Lita. She was energetic, young, and flashy. She could entertain you in other ways than just showing her tits like Trish, BB, Terri or others. The problem though, is that Lita's biggest feature was showing her thong and she never really branched off into the mainstream like The Rock did. So week in and week out, fans are being told that the only thing women are good for is being half naked. You actually had a commentator keep talking about their breasts with a catchy name as Puppies. Screw the quality of matches, the only thing The King made seem important was the Puppies. How can ANY women match be taken serious?

That was the last boom in wrestling. Until the next boom happens, fans will continue to think of women as nothing more than good for their T&A. So now, when you put on a quality womens match, you either get people changing the channel or showing zero interest. On the flip side, if you hold a bikini contest, fans will tune in. I believe it was the Melina/Beth match that scored less than the following week's bikini contest a month or so ago. That right there shows you how little womens wrestling is thought of.

You may have companies like SHIMMER, trying to bring back the art of women wrestling, but until you can change the minds of the WWE fans, women wrestling in the US will always be nothing more than a bathroom break.

The Attitude Era has been over for 7 years. Yet, Vince's choices in that era about women wrestling still has an effect today.

Nice of you to leave out the fact that the women are drawing better than most of the men. The segements featuring a Diva/Knockout match are usually the highest rated or not far off.

Where in my entire post was I even talking about TNA? I was pointing out an obvious sign that fans care more about T&A than real women's wrestling.

I don't think you can pin it all on wrestling fans. A lot of guys surfing the channels are going to stop on a bikini contest and leave it there..

Women's wrestling in the WWE has grown a lot. They don't have many healthy divas right now who can work.. but they're trying. That bikini contest a few weeks back was the first time in a while I've seen the divas showing off their bodies instead of wrestling over the titles.

I didn't really pin it on the fans. It all goes back to the wrestling company (for the most part the WWE). They kept projecting how women half naked was more important than talented women. The WWE tried to humiliate Molly Holly because she didn't fit the slutty type while they had a binkini contest every week on SD. It teaches the fans to not care about a straight up match.
