This is a common wrestling debate of modern times, with some claiming that breaking kayfabe is good for the product and makes it more entertaining, or at least saying it doesn't hurt anything. Personally I see wrestling as being no different to a movie in that it is telling a story and you need to suspend your disbelief in order to truly enjoy it. By that token, breaking kayfabe is, to me, the equivalent of an actor admitting the movie isn't real in the middle of it. It's something which really annoys me, and the worst offender is... TNA.
This is a classic example of this...
When Ken linked me to this I originally just laughed that the dress rehearsal footage for this lame spot was leaked on the internet. He then informed me that TNA THEMSELVES posted this dress rehearsal on their own youtube channel. To me that is a fucking joke. I know that TNA is mainly a company for "smarks", and that posting something on youtube isn't as damaging as breaking kayfabe on air (which they often do anyway - see Sting at BFG for a fairly big recent example) but for a wrestling company to release this sort of footage just makes me sad.
Thoughts on TNA's attitude to kayfabe in light of this, and on wrestling companies breaking kayfabe in general?

I know some fool will come in and be like "Ohay it's 2009/10 kayfabe is dead!"
I disagree. Clearly anybody besides Jasmine over the age of 12 knows wrestling is predetermined. However they don't know the inside workings unless they're a big fan, and in my mind it should remain that way. But that's not even the issue.
A pro wrestling company, is supposing to present the "sport" of pro wrestling. Just like if you're watching a sports movie, you need to be told it's a sport, made to believe it's a sport, and for it to be presented like a sport. That's why it's sports entertainment. You don't see Remember The Titans pointing out that the football games in the movie aren't real. It takes you out of the moment and out of the story.
Shoots to an extent are acceptable but blatant kayfabe breaking on TV is terrible. TNA posting a dress rehearsal is also pretty fucking awful.
I didnt see this on Impact last week though? Wasn't this like the original incident, or did they do the 'Abyss gets burned" again on TV, then release this?
I know Abyss referenced it this last Impact, but how do you know this was a rehersal thing? Did they have other stuff on it?
I think it's unforgivable. I'm completely against breaking the forth wall, even when they're trying to be cheeky or funny about it. It's why I find DX to be unbearable.
Wrestlers I like:
Bryan Danielson, Claudio Castagnoli, Chris Hero, CM Punk, Nigel McGuinness, Shinsuke Nakamura, Eddie Kingston, Low Ki, Daisuke Sekitmoto, Jon Moxley, Mike Quackenbush, Jimmy Olsen, KENTA, AJ Styles, Mr. Anderson, The Briscoes, Hiroshi Tanahashi, Pinkie Sanchez, The Miz, The Colony, El Generico, Austin Aries, Chris Jericho, Luke Gallows, Sara Del Rey, Sami Callihan, Steve Corino, Layla El, Johnny Gargano, Beer Money, Samoa Joe, and The Big Show.
I have a new 'Be The Booker' coming out soon.
If that sort of thing tickles your fancy, you should keep an eye out for it.
You really should.
I watch wrestling for story telling. I don't watch wrestling just for the fixed competition. When I sit down to watch WWE (or TNA on occasion), I want to be journeyed into a tale of two people battling for a belt, with some bad blood boiling between them. That's why I don't watch Superstars. It's just random wrestling. I guess that's why I can appreciate HHH/Orton at WrestleMania 25 more than other people. Breaking your character is just an insult to the fans tuning in to see you, and it shows just how unprofessional you can be on TV. That video posted by Tommy... was fucking whack. I don't like seeing that at all, because for one it kills the entire mood and intensity of seeing it being performed on TV, and it makes me think more and more about how they rehearse everything they do, instead of the actual storyline I'm watching. Ya' see, I'm glad in WWE Land no other wrestling companies exist right now. That is, until TNA comes up to be squashed on Monday nights.
Favorite Wrestlers: CM Punk, Hernandez, Rey Mysterio, Shawn Michaels, Edge

Re: Breaking Kayfabe
I don't mind them breaking kayfabe in some instances. A good example would be earlier this year, when HHH and Steph were suddenly revealed to be married all along. It added a lot of heat to a storyline (pity they pissed it all up).
