| Re: Best Iron man Match? Ricky Steamboat vs Rick Rude from Beach Blast 1992 is my favorite WCW match of all time. They managed to pack several different stories into the thirty minutes. Steamboat was doing heel tactics, while Rude was getting the face treatment, only to have things reversed. Both men got shocking falls over the other. Instead of just relying on one main story it came off as both men wanting to try something out of the norm. It's pretty much my ultimate example of what pro wrestling is to me. Just two men going out there without any titles on the line or silly gimmicks and putting on a story.
I'm not a huge fan of Iron Man matches though. Whether you intend to or not, you're taking away a lot of drama when you do one of these matches, especially one hour ones. The very thing that makes hour long matches fun is the fact that you didn't expect the match to last so long. Once you state it will last a certain amount of time (Thirty minutes or more) you're taking away the fun. The other problem is something Shawn Michaels vs Bret Hart is a perfect example of - killing time. It doesn't matter how long a match is as long as the viewer is interested during the entire bout. However, in the Wrestlemania 12 match, you could skip the first 45 minutes and still understand the story. I don't see any point in having a long match for the sake of having a long match. If you can tell a story in the course of 20 minutes, tell it in 20 minutes. Don't drag it out for 50 minutes like Shawn Michaels and Hunter did in their Hell in a Cell. People are far more likely to be bored with a long match than a short one.
That is the very thing that worries me about John Cena vs Randy Orton. I was bored with their 20 minute HIAC match. Now they're giving us a match three times as long. That has some serious potential of being my most hated match of the year. Perhaps I'm a glutton for punishment, but that fear is only the driving force for why I want to see the match.
