I was on 411mania earlier and in one of their features (Fact or fiction), a question of whether Shane McMahon leaving the WWE was the biggest news story of the year. While one of the guys said "Yes", the other disagreed citing Misawa's death as bigger. While certainly both were huge and unexpected, which one was more shocking? Or was there something more shocking?

Definately Misawa's unfortunate death. You can't script or expect a death like that to happen. Especially to a major pioneer in the wrestling business.

Misawa's obviously. Shane might have been shocking, but I really don't care.
Deaths in wrestling are common these days, but there's only been a few that were currently active and big names at the same time, and Misawa died IN THE RING. Very shocking to me.

Re: Biggest Shock of 2009 - Shane O'Mac or Misawa?
I'm going with a slightly different approach. Which one had a better possibility of happening? While deaths in wrestling matches are very rare, they do happen. Even if the odds of one of the biggest Puro names of all time dying in the ring has huge odds against not happening, there was still some chance of it happening. On the other hand, I would have never guessed that one of the McMahon children would of left the business under their own choice. I'm fully expecting one day for the news of Vince stepping down to happen. It will be a huge story, but it wont be shocking. But to have Shane or Stephanie leave? It never crossed my mind.
That being said, I would say Misawa's death is the biggest single story of the year though. A little different than biggest shock.

Re: Biggest Shock of 2009 - Shane O'Mac or Misawa?
Both really had a equal shot of happening. You don't expect it, but it was always a possibility. There had been rumours and whatnot about the McMahons ans Shane having outside interests, just as it was a wonder how Misawa had never suffered serious neck injury before with all the neck-bumps he takes.
As for which has the biggest effecrt on the industry, we will have to wait for Shane to leave to tell but I can't really see much changing. Wrestling in Japan is no where near as popular as it once was, so Misawa's death wasn't really a national tragedy. However, the death of one of the best ever... and I'm talking like top 5 in wrestling history... in the ring during a match. That honestly shocked me. It was a tragedy, whereas Shane leaving was just interesting.
Misawa's death is the biggest shock in wrestling since Benoit.

Re: Biggest Shock of 2009 - Shane O'Mac or Misawa?
Yeah the fact that it happened in the ring was the main thing which shocked me about Misawa's death. For some reason, although it was surprising, I always had a slight feeling that Shane could leave. Maybe it's because he was more interested in the business side of things, but I never got the feeling that wrestling was his life. Misawa dying was more shocking because of who he is and how it happened.

Being a Misawa fan myself obviously means his death meant more to me than it would to others who didn't know him... but I think all the stuff came that with his death like the reports and the youtube videos of his death and so on really hit home the reality of how dangerous pro wrestling can be, and why it is important for workers to look after themselves both in and outside of the ring more.

Yeah I hope it serves as a warning to those who insist on continually pushing themselves in the ring even at an old age. If I was a wrestler I'd want to get out while I'm young with my body still in one piece.

Re: Biggest Shock of 2009 - Shane O'Mac or Misawa?
Misawa's death definitely has been the biggest shock this year, if not of all time, atleast for me anyways.
Misawa was the guy that cemented my love for puro and I'll be honest in saying that I've cried alot about his death. Especially the day it happened. I can't tell you how badly it bothered me to watch the video of them trying to revive him in the ring, that just broke my heart. Everyone wanted him to get up so badly, but he didn't, and couldn't.
Misawa personifies what professional wrestling is to me and that will never change. I will always consider him the greatest wrestler of all time.
Had he died in his sleep or outside of the ring, it might not have been as shocking but the fact that he died in the ring really added some shock to it. But now that more is revealed about his health before his death, it's not so surprising.
I mean, the guy was basically crippled before he died but he still took bumps, he didn't care. He still pushed himself harder than ever before and still had the same amount of passion as he did ten years ago. The suplex from Saito was just the straw that broke the camel's back after years of his spine being slowly degraded from all the insanely stiff bumps. I mean, he never took a break. The most time off he ever had was in 1998 when he missed two tours after losing the Triple Crown to Kawada. Which two tours is only like two or three months.
It's a blessing that he did die and didn't survive because if he did, he would be a vegetable for the rest of his life, which would definitely have been sadder to see. It would have been even sadder for Misawa himself. To have gone from being in the ring which brought him so much joy to suddenly not being able to do it, that's the real sad part. When someone loves doing what they do and is suddenly stopped from doing it, and can't do it anymore for reasons not in their control like health problems for example.
His passion for what he did inside that squared circle is unmatched. God bless Misawa and his family.
Rest In Peace Mitsuharu Misawa You are deeply missed
