How high do you rank Eddie Guerrero as an in ring performer?
How high do you rank him in the ring? Hes one of my all time favorites, hed make my top 10 with ease, but I rate Benoit and Bret Hart slightly higher. Your thoughts?
Re: How high do you rank Eddie Guerrero as an in ring performer?
Great performer, but one that's overrated in death. He was good, great even, but as good as people on forums and in WWE make him out to be, he wasn't quite that great.

Based on the fact that he could hang on the mat with the best of them like Benoit and Malenko (although not quite as good) but was also more athletic than them, and could do things that they couldn't, I'd probably rank him (on a scale from 1-10) a 9.0.

He'd most likely be in my top 30 wrestlers of all time, maybe top 20.
The best thing Eddie has going for him is just the pure diversity of his work. He had great brawls, great mat matches, great junior-style matches, great title matches, great matches vs big guys and vs small guys, matches as a heel and face, etc. Pretty much every stage of his career has QUALITY. The is also a great case of getting more out of less as he has matches like the '04 match with Show that was epic for the time it got given, the Batista match which was a straigh-up carry job against an unmotivated opponenent, etc I think he had a better 2004 than Benoit, though I am probably alone in that as I'd take Eddie's matches with JBL over Benoit's matches with Michaels (:0). The Rey match from HH '97 was the last really great WCW match and one of the best matches of cruiserweight matches ever. Their 2005 match on Smackdown is also epic. The guy never wrestled the same match over and over unlike a lot of guys and always adapted to his opponent. I think he might be the most charismatic wreslter ever too, after Flair.
So yeah, I'd rate him pretty high. Certainly not the Best Ever, but an epic wrestler nonethless.

Id also take his matches with JBL at Judgement Day over Benoit/Michaels. Probably one of the best brawls ive seen. I found his matches with Angle a little underwhelming, especially considering how talented both guys are

I have to agree, though Angle was really stuck in his formula in 2004 and was wrestling the same match week in week out. The Wrestlemania and 2/3 Falls matches are good though because of Eddie and his charisma and creativity. They had a match on Smackdown in 2005 which is also pretty great which is on the Eddie DVD.

I enjoyed the lumberjack match they had. They made realy good use of the stipulation, Eddie was creative in that match finding ways to outsmart Angle. I wasnt a big fan of the Wrestlemania match, it was good in some places, but I think it lacked intensity and could have been better
Re: How high do you rank Eddie Guerrero as an in ring performer?
I loved Eddie's in ring work. I agree with Steve in the fact that you never felt like you were watching the same match over and over. Seriously, I remember watching Bret Hart matches back in the day being able to predict the move sets he was going to use. Bret Hart was an AMAZING technical wrestler, but like Benoit I thought they became quite stale and dull because it was alot of the same motions and reactions match after match. None of them really distinguished themselves from others unless their opponent made that happen.
This wasn't meant as a knock to Benoit or Harts in ring skills because I thought they were both incredible, just saying it became quite predictable.
One thing I always loved about Eddie in the later WWE years was how he "lied, cheated and stole" victories away from heels. He was very creative about the ways he would get the cheap wins and still come off as a face. That in itself is using the ring to your advantage.
I will be honest though, I am a big time Eddie supporter and while I do think in death he became a bit glofied, I think he almost deserves every ounce of it. I really miss Eddie more than I miss Stone Cold, The Rock and The Hitman all together. Perhaps its the fact that I KNOW he can never make a return.
