Everyone has their favorite gimmick match and wargames was mine. The match beyond. I love the idea of all out warfare between rivaling factions and I think it's something that wrestling could use a little more of at times without overkill (i.e. in the Attitude Era when everyone had a stable).
I like the Main Event Mafia but some of their members are over the hill when it comes to ring work and they don't have enough credible challengers at the moment. I think Lethal lockdown is a bit of a clusterfuck because there isn't enough room for the participants to operate. With that said, I'd really enjoy a good old fashioned wargames match between them and say Sting, Lashley, AJ, and a couple others.
In WWE, we have a few stables like Hart Dynasty and Legacy but nothing pops out at me as having potential for a wargames style of match and it wouldn't tie in well with the TVPG era anyway.
Two of my favorite matches of all-time (actually 3) were wargames matches. In 1987, at The Great American Bash, you had the Horsemen (Flair, Anderson, Tully, Luger, J.J.) vs. The Road Warriors, Dusty, Nikita, and Paul Ellering. Back then, the Bash was a tour so this match actually took place twice. Then in 1992, there was Sting, Barry Windham, Dustin Rhodes, Ricky Steamboat, and Nikita Koloff vs. The Dangerous Alliance (Austin, Eaton, Anderson, Rude, and Zybyszko). They were bloody...they were brutal.. but the best parts of these matches was the workrate. Everyone involved knew how to sell.. knew how to brawl and make it look realistic..and most of all, everyone knew how to work an extremity and stick with it.
Agree all the way around. Always loved the War Games matches. Finally got to see all of them recently, thanks to this site. Had the very first one on a VHS tape that nearly got worn out. Great stuff.
I've always wondered why it never got picked up, as its an awesome format to use.

Seriously.. I like to pimp 1980's NWA as much as I can. Even early 90's WCW. The workrate, storylines, and characters were awesome.I wasn't watching wrestling (too young) when most of it went down but I was lucky enough to live next to an old video store that rented out their VHS's and the shit is off the hook. I recommend that era to anyone who is a fan of that style.
Look at the names... Flair, Funk, Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, Lex Luger, Sting, Midnight Express, Rock N' Roll Express, Road Warriors, Dusty Rhodes, Nikita Koloff, Ron Garvin, Dr, Death Steve Williams, Michael Hayes, Barry Windham, etc.. all in the same territory at the same time. Fucking unreal. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.
I grew up watching WWF and Stampede myself. We got UWF for the short time it was around. Oh, and GLOW. I knew about the NWA, AWA, and so on, but rarely got to watch. I would occassionally get to watch NWA/JCP stuff, but rarely. A lot of what I knew came from wrestling magazines and the occasional tape. Loved the Four Horsemen, the Road Warriors, Nikita Koloff, and later Sting and Vader.
The NWA promotions have always held a special mystique for me, because I so rarely got to watch back in the day.

I always loved Wargames as well it has been a couple of years since I have seen one right enough but I was always intrigued by the two rings format, I always done the same with my action figures as a kid, I think if you stuck some modern day people in there with the space to work with that the 2 rings give you, you could see something special.
I would love it if they brought it back but I think it should be built up to be a fierce rivalry between factions then drop the bombshell that they are bringing back WARGAMES! would be brilliant.

Wargames was a part of it.
Word. I wasnt watching at the time, but having watched stuff from that era thanks to the majesty of the internet I can see that period was incredible for wrestling.
I think War Games is a great concept that also could be pretty shiity depending on the booking. I really love the '87, '89 and '92 ones.

I don't think Vince will ever run Wargames. He has a habit of either ignoring or burying anything he didn't create.
I was a huge Wargames mark, but I don't need my memories tarnished by seeing a PG rated bloodless wargames between DX and friends against Legacy and friends.
Of course, a Wargames DVD wouldn't suck........

Meaner than a rattlesnake, tougher than shoe leather, more dangerous than a hollowed-eyed scorpion, middle-aged and crazy, crazy like a fox.

It wouldn't be any worse than any of the later War Games WCW put on.
I would absolutely love a War Games DVD. They could even skip over the last few and just devote the time to giving a few matches to show the lead up to the matches.

I thought 1991's was good too. I know there was the big Sid Vicious botch, but Jim Ross' selling of it, to me added the drama, and Sid Vicious incidently added the danger element I always thought was missing from this match.
WCW did too, if you noticed whenever they did their house show promos, they showed the botched powerbomb quite regularly.

There wasn't a botch in the match...
