Let us discuss some of the best "big match feels" ever created

I was talking to Steve on MSN the other day and I was watching the Angle/Austin match from Summerslam back in 2001. If you are a platinum member and haven't seen it, you can find the match in the wrestling multimedia section.

Anyway, Steve commented that the match represented one of the best big match feels the WWE had ever created. The whole thing with the locker rooms watching in the back, the video package, the feud itself, the epic staredown... it all created an epic "big match" atmosphere. It seemed like the outcome of the match was life or death, and I feel that is something which is often lacking from current wrestling (mainstream at least). It seems WWE and TNA arn't capable of producing this sort of atmosphere very often.

Anyway, I am asking you to name and explain some of the best "big match" feels ever created for a match, in any company, any era, anywhere. Do any particular matches stand out in your memory as having a huge atmosphere to them?

One stands out in my mind the most is Hollywood Hogan versus The Rock at Wrestlemania 18.

just listen to the crowd. The energy/atmosphere is awesome. Well yea, that's the match that sticks out in my mind.

I personally was very hyped for Team SmackDown vs Team Raw at SS 05, Cena/Edge TLC, as well as the first Elimination Chamber.

Really?

Most of the huge WrestleMania matches, mostly involving The Rock, Austin & Hogan.

The main event of Canadian Stampede had a big match feel to it, surprising because it was supposed to be a nothing show.

Same here.

I thought 2008 had a bunch of them. Jeff/Orton at the RR, HBK/Flair at WM, Taker/Edge at SS, and HBK/Y2J at Unforgiven. But apart from HBK/Taker, I struggle to think of any this year.

Re: Let us discuss some of the best "big match feels" ever created

Two obvious ones:

Rock vs Austin at Wrestlemania 17
With Rock having risen to superstardom in the 2 years since their Wrestlemania 15, and Austin still a huge star, this was always going to be their biggest encounter. The venue, the crowd, the hype video etc all contributed to making this feel massive. Two of the biggest stars ever battling it out for the title. It's amazing when you think how much of a bigger deal the World Title was here compared to now. You got the feeling these guys would do anything for it, and Austin did. I'm struggling to think of a Mania main event with a bigger feel than this one... I'm sure Jim will correct me.

Samoa Joe vs Kenta Kobashi
As said in another thread, this really did seem like a huge encounter, the biggest in ROH history and a defining moment in the history of wrestling in general. It seemed that big. I only first watched it a few years after it happened but I still got that impression. With Kobashi such a legend in Japan, him coming over to America to face ROH's biggest and most dominant star was just a huge deal, and thankfully the match delivered. Obviously this one also benefitted from crowd reaction and all that, but it just felt like the mother of all epic confrontations.

Re: Let us discuss some of the best "big match feels" ever created

A few non-WWE ones I can think of, without going into too much detail:

Punk vs Joe III - The no time limit stip meant there was garanteed to be a winner, factor in the quality of the first too and that it was in Punk's home town...

Low Ki vs KENTA - Mostly because of the hot crowd, but it was also two of the biggest stars at the time going at it

Danielson vs Joe (Fight Of The Century)

Angle vs Joe (Genesis) - Wasn't that high on the match itself but the atmosphere for it was great

I'll probably throw up a few WWE ones later.

Re: Let us discuss some of the best "big match feels" ever created

I've not seen most, but calls with Punk/Joe III and also the Angle/Joe match. Can't help but thinking Angle/Joe would have seemed even bigger had it been handled better though. They should have held off on it.

Re: Let us discuss some of the best "big match feels" ever created

In recent memory, Ric Flair vs. Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania 24.

This match stood out because we knew if Flair was going to lose, it'd be in this match. The atmosphere and storytelling throughout the match was just epic, and the emotional ending just did it for me. I remember at the time rating this 5 stars, but I'll have to re-watch it. Probably the best send off I ever recall.

Sabu vs. Taz. They built that up for so damn long.

Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart - Brother feuds are usually good especially when they're Harts in the WWF.

Bret Hart vs. British Bulldog at Summerslam
