First one that springs to mind is the Shawn Michaels/Razon Ramon ladder match from Wrestlemania X. Yes it was the first of it's kind, but that doesn't mean it was great. Match is average at best imo.

I think that holds true for a lot of matches with that stigma. Barring the Elimination Chamber (the very first one, Survivor Series '02) innovation doesn't always equal classic. Granted, a lot of it may have to do with what we've been presented with since '94, but it's all up to who's watching the match.

That elimination chamber was a very good match in its own right though, in my opinion at least. The ladder match I just didn't like at all. Maybe I'd appreciate it more if I'd seen it before all the ladder matches that have occurred since... I dunno.
The Ironman match is pretty average. I liked parts, but yeah it was boring for the most part. I think a lot of matches get praised simply because they are big matches. It's Bret and Shawn at Wrestlemania in an Ironman match for the title... HOW CAN IT NOT BE AWESOME??
Also obviously the memorable moment of Michaels winning the title makes people look back on the match more favourably than they perhaps should.

Watching the ironman match, I truly was not entertained in the slightest until the "sudden death" part.
Some matches have potential to be good, but it all depends on how the people want to work (see Lesnar/Goldberg). Talent alone does not make a good match.

I was entertained when I first saw the Ironman match when it aired but when I saw it on the WWE Title DVD a few years ago, it certainly does not live up to all of its praise.

In regards to the Iron Man match, I will say it's not overrated at all in some ways. Basically, you either love it and think it's one of the best ever or you think it's dull and most of it was an utter bore. It's probably one of the more controversial matches of all time. It's certainly not the worst match of all time. There's been a lot worse WWE title matches at Wrestlemania, but do to half hating it and half loving it, I'll say it's rated (Overall) is perfect.
