Wrestlers that fell off?

I got the idea for this topic from another board I visit. Let's talk about some of the biggest downfalls in wrestling. Wrestlers who were once on top but ruined it due to substance abuse or other personal demons. I'll get it started.

Jake "The Snake" Roberts - I'm sure everyone knows his story. He went from one of the most promising wrestlers to showing up to small indy dates piss wasted and being a joke among wrestling fans. Really sad.

Scott Hall - A big WWF star that was part of the Kliq, but as time went on he let his drinking problem get the best of him. Even with all of the help in the world he still managed to fuck himself over again and again.

Larry Sweeney - Was universally thought of as the best manager on the indie scene, maybe one of the best in the world, but spiraled out of control due to his illness and ended up homeless and ranting on myspace about some backyard fed he was starting up.

Backseat Boys - I actually didn't know about this story until a few days ago, but in the early 2000s these guys were the hottest tag team on the indy scene but Trent Acid had a bad heroin problem and Johnny Kashmere was caught blowing some dude in the bathroom at the ECW arena. I think Trent Acid might be trying to make a comeback but it's really unlikely considering his past history.

Chris Benoit - The most obvious one. Went from being a former world champion to killing his family and comitting suicide. He'll probably go down as the biggest disgrace to the wrestling industry of all-time. You can't get much lower than that.

Add some of your own, I'll post more later if I think of some.

Re: Wrestlers that fell off?

Ultimate Warrior - He went from the most popular wrestler in WWF and the successor to Hulk Hogan's throne to a crazy, bigoted, public speaker. His money disputes with McMahon were a key contributor. He'll always be remembered as a painted up nonsensical clown.

Re: Wrestlers that fell off?

I'd say The Ultimate Warrior. He was the people's wrestler in the late eighties/early ninties. Then there was the seriod scandal, he failed at a comeback to the WWE and just killed his reputation. He repeated the action going to WCW and putting on bad matches. Then, he just started ranting on EVERYTHING and failed another comeback.

Also, DDP. DDP was one of the biggest main eventers in the late/early 2000's. What the fuck happened to him now?

^It'll be worth ruling the indy feds, Steve.

Speaking of more recent, how about Lance Cade. What a package this guy was. Then he just starts flipping out and getting injured.

Re: Wrestlers that fell off?

jake the snake roberts - owned his audence and damn good as promos. great mind for the buisness and great phycology. passed that on to three former world champions stone cold steve austin, ddp and raven. was doing great should had been atleast ic champion. his marriage was falling apart; jake had his drug problem at least in his control but when his wife divorced he rattled him. when he came to wwf in 96, wwe wanted him to not wrestle anymore and just be a mentor and part of creative team. that sent jake over the edge and his drug problem went into over drive. could had so much more. as for now at least he has gotten himself clean in control after that questionable event last year which i raise my eyebrow about.

barry windham: one of the best babyfaces and workers in this industry. was just a natural in the ring. got over with the people and did it with out his father help or going off his father's name and legacy. was extreamly popular in the 80 and drew. he was good enough at the time to be nwa world champion when the nwa world title acutal ment something unlike today. kevin sulivan said he should been world champion and a few others. ironically ric flair said should be world champion but flair didn't allow that to happen. left crockett for wwf but didn't get what he wanted out of it. comes back to crockett which was just named wcw. flair fucks wcw and turner over and takes the belt. now here is barry's moment to shine but sadly barry's time passed him by as sting and luger caught wcw eye. slowly barry windham became a cookie cutter wrestler with a cookie cutter look as he once was great talent who was anything but cookie cutter. didn't achieve that much sucess in the 90's with him jumping ship from wcw and wwf a few times.

Re: Wrestlers that fell off?

Two lesser ones, but still down falls:

Marty Jannetty - I would say he was the more talented Rocker. Yet he couldn't stay out of trouble long enough to do anything worthwhile post-Rocker breakup. We had to wait nearly a year before the two feuded because Marty got fired over substance abuse. That would end up being a trend with Marty. It may be doubtful that he could have had as much success as Shawn, but I could easily see Marty being one of the top midcard faces of the entire 90's. The guy may even have the record for most firings from Vinnie Mac.

Dan Maff - I was joking with Marketh on MSN the other day about how Maff was going to be a breakout star in 2005. Had it not been for his "Car accident", I wouldn't have been surprised if Maff would of eventually won the ROH title. With his size and raw talent, being signed by the WWE or TNA wouldn't have been out of the question either. The guy fucked up his career that could have been huge.

Re: Wrestlers that fell off?

Man, happy to see I'm not the only Maff fan. He is easily one of the standout guys of ROH 2003-04.

He has become a yoga teacher and motivational speaker. I think he ended up pretty well

I had not heard about Larry Sweeney past him leaving ROH due to his illness

Road Warrior Hawk: He (kayfabe) fell off the titantron but after he left the company he had some drug issues.

Greg Valentine: Appears at indy and backyard shows
