I was thinking about Batista and how he debuted in WWE as "Deacon Batista" back in 2002, and was basically Reverend D-Von's enforcer.

That made me think, are there other wrestlers who have started out with some god awful gimmick but eventually made it to the main event anyway, either sticking with a similar gimmick and making it work or completely changing it? A lot of people say that a bad gimmick can kill a wrestler's career before it has really started, but I want this thread to be evidence that a terrible gimmick will not necessarily stop you reaching main event at some stage...
Anybody got any more?

Eugene springs to mind. The mentally challenged over excited nephew of Eric Bischoff. He was decent in the ring, but no one could take him seriously because of his gimmick. He feuded with Triple H. Over dumbshit. Yawn. Then had a feud with Uncle Eric. Eric got his head shaved and OH MY GOD. HE DYES HIS HAIR. Tag team match after tag team match. Then he attacked Duggan and turned heel. But then that was forgotten fast and he was face again. I don't know. I just really didn't like his character.

The Rock was pretty awful as the clean-cut, second generation 'star' the fans didn't take to him at all, and check out that attire, awful, but once he was given a free reign to become the cocky heel, well, we know what happened next. Probably the biggest example along with...
The Ringmaster

Possibly the worst name in the history of Wrestling but it was what Steve Austin was lumbered with when he arrived in the WWF as Ted DiBiase's protege. DiBiase soon left and Austin soon became the 'Texas Rattlesnake'.

He was not supposed to be taken seriously. He was a joke gimmick, who could also possibly challenge you in the ring. No one came up with this gimmick thinking that it would be the next Hulk Hogan.

The Ringmaster gimmick was based on the idea that the guy would be a hell of a wrestler in the ring. Originally, it was supposed to go to Benoit. I thought it was a good idea. It just so happened that Stone Cold was a better idea. But considering that we constantly ask for better wrestlers, the idea of a top notch wrestler is not the worst gimmick out there.
To me, the worst gimmick was when they gave Matt Morgan a stuttering gimmick. The guy is 7ft, 300lbs. That alone should make him stand out. But instead, let's make him stutter. That should get him over.
Oh Mantaur was HORRIBLE. I remember Jim Cornette would stand on the outside of the ring with his hand to his mouth in awe of how supposedly "awesome" he was.
What about Damien Demento? The man who heard voices and had a standing knee drop as a finisher.
