Mike Awesome- How this guy didn't get huge I'll never know, he had the size, power and could do moves that Wrestlers half his size struggle with. Although he didn't have the greatest look or the best charisma once you put him in a ring all of that was forgotten because some of the stuff he produced just left you open mouthed. The only thing I can think of that could of possibly put mainstream promoters off of him was his background in hardcore Wrestling since his fans were used to seeing him do the extreme stuff that simply wasn't allowed in mainstream Wrestling. His stint in WCW probably killed off any chance of him getting a serious run in the WWE with such 'comedy' gimmicks as 'The Fat Chick Thriller' and 'That 70's Guy' he was no longer seen as a viable threat anymore. So despite his size and incredible moveset by the time the WWE bought out WCW I think the writing was pretty much on the wall for Mike Awesome. A terrible loss and proof that being related to the most famous Wrestler ever doesn't guarentee you a successful career. Watch his work against Masato Tanaka in ECW to see his full potential.

I really feel as if Awesome just had bad timing. He blames the bad gimmicks in WCW due to Hulk Hogan leaving at the Bash. However, near the end he was recovering well. Had WCW stayed open, I could easily see Awesome or Lance Storm in the main event before the end of 2001.
As for the WWE run, he had the injury that took him out for some time, stiff competition with everyone from WWE, WCW and ECW trying to get a job and finally, Paul Heyman. I know Awesome blamed Paul Heyman for trying to keep the WWE from using him in 2001-2002 due to Awesome leaving ECW.

To be honest I think Mike Awesome would have done better to bide his time once WWE bought out WCW and perhaps returned to Japan, although I'm guessing to do that he would have probably had to of bought out his contract or sit it out for it's duration and perhaps didn't feel he had enough name value to do such a thing.
Never even thought of the Heyman issue, but I'm guessing he could of had a point if Heyman was in any way in charge of booking him, because lets face it, Awesome didn't exactly leave on the best of terms, not that you can blame him I guess.
I was also suprised he was never given a chance in TNA, he was released from WWE at around the time the company was formed and I would have thought he would have been a perfect fit for the Title picture in those early days, although by that stage he may have not been in the best shape physically, I'm sure a run at the top once again would have sorted that. I also wasn't aware that the gimmicks were due to Hogan's departure, seems strange though at a time when WCW needed nothing more than younger Heavyweights to fill the gaps that were being left by the older guys leaving.

Awesome was in TNA. He mostly wrestled with the New Church managed by James Mitchell. For whatever reason, he just didn't stick around.
You can tell I've been away from Wrestling for quite a while, I never knew he was TNA alumni. I would have thought he would have been a great addition if he was given a role similar to what he had in ECW, just the all conquering big-man perhaps with the added dimension of being bitter with the state of Wrestling within the USA. I can't see that putting him in with the more 'gothic' New Church would have been the best role for him to be honest. But then again, that's probably why he left if he felt it wasn't the right role for him.

Am I the only one that thinks that Billy Gun/Mr. Ass really could've made it somewhere further than a gay guy gimmick?
He had a decent look, but that was about all he had going for him in my opinion. I can't even remember what he's like on the mic so he can't be that great and although he was passable as a Tag-Team worker on his own he wasn't far off awful.

I get what you're saying, but at that time he was good in the ring. I enjoyed his tag team matches when he was with Road Dogg.
I wouldn't even say he was good in the ring. He luckily had some decent partners throughout his career and a few very popular tag team gimmicks. However, you can go back through all of his singles gimmicks and they literally all failed:
Heel Smokin' Gunn - The fans didn't care about him being on his own, which led to...
Rockabilly - The gimmick tanked horribly
Mr. Ass - He came off of a successful Bad Ass gimmick, but was out of his league when they tried to push him as a singles star. With a few months he was back to tagging.
The One - He was even given an IC title reign, yet people still didn't care. Luckily, Benoit was there to save us just as he did with Orlando Jordan's horrible US title reign
Torrie's Guy - Returning in 2003, he was outpopped by a heel Jamie Noble in their brief feud before he got hurt for the 100th time.
Bad Ass 2.0 - Returned at the Rumble, yet people still didn't care. Vince quickly paired him with Hardcore Holly before finally releasing him.
That's a long history of bombing, yet succeeding as a tag wrestler.
