Is It Cool To Like Hogan Again?

I've noticed on wrestling forums his popularity comes & goes in cycles. One minute he's recognized as the greatest of all time because of his popularity, drawing power, impact on the business etc. The next people deride him because of how similar all his matches were, him not putting over many people by losing and so forth.

I have to say, I've never been a fan. Even as a young lad I wasn't intrested in him. I'm English, yet he was purely pro-American, he was hardly ever on TV, I only saw about 6 matches involving him per year, I was never impressed with his matches and he had hair like my grandad.

I think most people acknowledge that he was a shitty wrestler, they just appreciate the fact he was a huge draw and a big boost for the wrestling industry.

The in thing now is to say that he's not a shitty wrestler. Apparently more people appreciate him because he could control a crowd by doing very little, wheras whereas somebody like Chris Benoit broke his body to get half the reaction Hogan used to get in his prime. If more people liked to watch him wrestle than he must be the better wrestler, for example.

Although I don't buy it myself.

Where are these people you speak of? They surely aren't on this forum, apart from Jim.

Almost everybody had turned that way on the previous forum I was on. Not the newer/younger posters. But people around my age were all becoming big Hogan fans again. Apparently a muscle flex with complimentary baby oil is better than a Flying Headbutt.

Well a muscle flex wont turn your brains into marshmallow...

Not really sure why people in general assume fads on certain forums are shared all across the internets. Not specific to this thread, of course...

Re: Is It Cool To Like Hogan Again?

Probably because wrestling fans are fickle. Chances are that there will be some overlap on forums.

The thing about Hogan is that he rarely showed off any of his skills. While he was hardly a Chris Benoit, most fans do not realize Hogan knew some real wrestling holds. However, he didn't need to show the skills or change things up because his paint-by-number matches got the biggest reaction of the night and was the main reason why fans bought a ticket to the show. Hogan was a damn good storyteller in the ring. As far as selling goes, he was pretty damn good at it at times.

The main reason why Hogan does have some support outside of how he had fans eating out of the palm of his hand were some of the great matches he was a part of years ago. As "Bad" as Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior were, they had one hell of a match in Toronto. Likewise, one of Randy Savage's best matches was against Hogan at Wrestlemania 5. When you have a few nearly flawless matches, people will naturally praise you.

When it comes down to it, wrestling is still a worked sport where it's all about getting a reaction and to force fans to open up their wallets. While there were some better pure wrestlers, there's very few wrestlers out there that could sell out an arena like Hogan and a few times put on a 4+ star match.

I think that match has dated badly. But it's also a great example of how Hogan & Warrior could get people to eat out of their hands.

I think people from that era like that match because Hogan looked like he was doing more than usual. But on reflection, he had matches after that were a hell of a lot better.

Re: Is It Cool To Like Hogan Again?

I liked Warrior/Hogan but I had a few issues with it. Ditto for Savage/Warrior, though my problems with that are the same as most matches of the style.

I like a few Hogan matches, but they are either visible carrys (vs Rock, vs Hansen) or matches that are just fun to see Hogan doing something you wouldn't expect him to do (vs Fujinami). The guy had a basic level of in-ring talent, but the style he worked was a pretty awful one. I don't think I would ever call him a great seller or a great brawler or anything like that.

Then again, I've never liked the logic of "if a guy pleases the crowds, he's a good wrestler". Good at giving the fans what they want, sure. But then you would have to call every X-Div/indy spotmonkey who gets a "THIS IS AWESOME" chant a great wrestler too.
