Then again, I've never liked the logic of "if a guy pleases the crowds, he's a good wrestler". Good at giving the fans what they want, sure. But then you would have to call every X-Div/indy spotmonkey who gets a "THIS IS AWESOME" chant a great wrestler too.
Would you say the X-Division wrestlers are the ones who brings in the majority of the fans or sells the most merchandise? I know I don't. I think that's the difference between what Hogan did (Over enough that he's a draw while getting cheers) compared to a spotty wrestler who people aren't invested in, but can get chants.

I think Hogan did a lot for the wrestling business and successfully managed to not suck all the time while he was in the ring, but he's an arrogant fuckhead who I can't stand for the most part. Basically, I can see his upside, I just don't like him.

This.
I have always read he has a giant ego and comes off like a complete dick
But I will admit he did well in his prime to get the fans on his side or to completely loath him

I have to agree with Jim. Considering wrestling isn't wrestling, it's sports entertainment, the whole point of having a match is to keep the fans involved. When you work for the WWE or any major mainstream company, better usually means that you can get the fans to like your stunts more. Hogan may not have been as athletic as Benoit, but yes, he was overall a better professional wrestler.

How do you define what a good wrestler is then? I may define it the same way as you, an athletic contest with ups and downs, a climax and good finish, but that doesn't mean that the majority of the wrestling world has the same idea (and they don't).

Again, I would use the "every X-Div/indy spotmonkey who gets a "THIS IS AWESOME" chant is a great wrestler too" arguement. Crowd reaction /= match quality.

I would say that it all comes down to entertainment. If the fans are more entertained it makes it a better match IMO. At least I thought that was the difference between professional and amateur wrestling, was professionals try to captivate the crowd by straying for real wrestling.
