I youtube'd a couple of The Rock old promos today and they were amazing. I had forgetten how truly over he was with the fans. The entire arena would hang on Rock's word, ready to start a "Rocky. Rocky chant. No one as yet to match the genius that is The Rock on the mic. Remember the story about Regal, Kurt, and Kurt's little ball? How about his interview with Lillian Garcia when he was WCW champion? When The Rock grabbed the mic you could be sure he was gonna say something memorable.
So I ask you who do you think on the WWE roster could match The Rock's talent on the mic and generally be as over as he was with a crowd?
I believe if Cena had kept his rapper gimmick he could have been very popular. It sure would beat his whole make joke, yell loudly routine.
Keep in mind when you watch those videos that the crowds are MUCH more lively than they are today. Even if someone does come along who can play the crowd like Rock could, it still won't seem as good because the crowds aren't as good. Having said that, I think MVP has a great deal of potential in that area. He might need to alter his gimmick a bit, but he could do it.

I agree, keep the cocky athlete gimmick, and give him back his inflatable entrance!
All that really has to happen is that you get a crowd to recognize who you are, what makes you stand out from the rest of the bunch, and how can you handle yourself infront of millions watching world wide and if you can handle the pressure and manage to speak without it sounding forced then it'll all come together. In alot of ways, you look at the current roster and guys like Batista who is short, sweet and to the point speaking wise makes it works because it sounds natural. John Cena once again very natural although at times it does sound very over-the-top and the bottom line is that if you can get over and just let it flow and speak naturally then you'll do much better for yourself. CM Punk is another name that comes to mind if he was given more free reign of what he could do with his stuff.

If promos wern't so heavily scripted and WWE's product wasn't so heavily marketed towards children, John Cena would definitely be in Rock's league. If The Rock was around in this era his promos would probably sound a lot like Cena's. WWE just suffocate guys with their over-scripting and the fact that they're not allowed to say anything edgy, which The Rock did all the time.
