WWE Survivor Series 2001 Review

WWE Survivor Series
November 18, 2001

Christian (c) vs Al Snow - European Championship Match
This was made on Heat without after Snow voiced his disgust of Christian. However, considering Snow is a multiple time European champion, it's not a bad move. Pre-match has Christian on the mic speaking to the crowd. Christian notes how tonight will be the day the WWE dies. Snow is using Maven's theme (Tough Enough Season 1 had just concluded). Snow starts off by riding Christian and goes for a few quick pin attempts. Nice reverse into a cradle suplex by Snow. 'We Want Head' chant from the crowd. Go figure, Snow is still over. Side Russian Leg Sweep gets Christian a two count. Christian locks in a headlock to slow the match down. Snow powers out of it and hits a headbutt, but Christian hits a trapped armed suplex. Christian taunts Snow in between chokes. Snow hits a few more trapped armed headbutts. Northern Lariat by Snow followed up with a sloppy Superkick. Christian runs at Snow, but Al lets Christian run right into a BK Bomb. That gets a two. Christian hits the Unprettier (The variation of the reverse DDT). Snow surprises Christian with a small package for a two count. Snow nails the Snow Plow, but Christian gets a foot on the ropes. Snow thinks he's won. Christian rolls out of the ring to draw Snow out. Snow gets a boot when he returns to the ring. Christian nails the Unprettier (Regular version) to pick up the victory. Regardless of the outcome of the main event, Christian will keep his job. Snow looked pretty good in the match, but Christian was just phoning it in. The crowd could really care less of Cage winning. Snow winning may of been a good idea. For an opener that was made on Heat, it was good enough. Personally though, I would of thrown Christian in the ring with someone else though so the match would of meant something. There was always Spike Dudley. He at least was around the WWE during the Invasion unlike Mr. Tough Enough. 7 Minutes. 2 Stars.

Tajiri vs William Regal
Tajiri is the Crusierweight champion, but the belt isn't on the line. Tajiri was brought into the WWE as Regal's loveable manservant. After Regal turned heel, this short lived feud began. On Smackdown, Regal had attacked Torrie Wilson, Tajiri's valet/girlfriend. Regal blocks several roundhouse kicks, but walks into a kick to the face. Regal with the Finlay Roll. Running knee strike to Tajiri. Tajiri ducks a running forearm and comes back with a dropkick to the knee. More roundhouse kicks. Tarantula for the 4 count. Regal has a busted nose, what else is new? Tajirir gets a two after a handspring elbow. Tajiri gets caught up between two ropes, being choked out. A bloodied Regal looks on at the crowd getting a nice reaction. Tajiri reverses a Double Armed Powerbomb into a Japanese Armdrag. Regal ducks a Deathblow kick. Headbutt to the midsection. Tajiri avoids another Double Underhook Powerbomb, but Regal counters Tajiri to finally connect with it to pick up the victory. After the match, Regal continues the assault with yet another Double Underhook Powerbomb. Regal starts to head out while Torrie Wilson runs out to check out her man. Regal is feeling a little frisky so he heads back into the ring and gives Torrie her own Doubled Underhook Powerbomb. The match was barely given any time. Luckily, Regal and Tajiri are both good for short matches. Given more time, this could of been a real gem. I don't understand why Al Snow got twice the amount of time as these two though. 3 Minutes. 2 1/4 Stars.

Edge (c) vs Test (c) - IC/US Title Unification Match
Test is the WWE IC Champion having won it from Edge. Edge won the WCW US Championship from Kurt Angle. The winner becomes either the undisputed IC or US Champion, depending on which side wins the main event tonight. Long tieup results in a draw. Another go at it sees another standstill. Test gives Edge a shove. Ducking a punch, Edge lays in with some punches and gets an one count after a running cross body. Edge gets out of a suplex, but runs into a closeline. Test throws Edge down on the guardrail a couple of times. Back in, Edge connects with a hiptoss and a dropkick. Edge with a sliding dropkick sends Test into the guard rail. Edge rams Test's head against the barricade. Back in again, Edge hits a running swinging neckbreaker for another one count. Test hotshots Edge. Test with another closeline in the corner. The match is slowed down by a chin lock to Edge. Edge knees himself out of the hold, but gets caught with a knee to the gut. Middle rope dropkick gets Edge a two. Powerslam to Edge only gets a two for Test. More punching my Edge. Test ducks a middle rope crossbody causing Edge to crash and burn. Test sets Edge up on the top turnbuckle, but Edge starts fighting. Edge attempts a Sunset Flip, but Test just hangs on. Test leaps from the top, but Edge connects with a dropkick in midair. Not sure what Test was attempting to do. More punches. Spinning heel kick to Test. Edge gets a two after his inverted Sidewalk Slam. Edge backslides a Pump Handle Slam into an Edgeomatic. That only gets a two. SPEAR!!! From Test?! Two only. Better than any spear Edge can do. Test misses a Big Boot but gets in his Pump Handle Slam. Edge somehow gets a shoulder up. Powerbomb is countered into the Hurricrana by Edge who follows it up with the Spear for the two count. Weak boot to Test, Test counters an Edgacater into a Full Nelson. Edge reverses it into a pinning attempt which finally scores the win for the future WWE Champion. WWE finally scores a win tonight. While today, this may look like an obvious win for Edge, at the time, Test was in the middle of a nice push since the Summer. Test had a pretty good chance to win. Like most of Test's career, this would be the abrupt end to his push. Test could just never keep a push going before having it stop without good reason. If you want wrestling, look elsewhere. This was a ten minute slobberknocker. A fun Test match, nothing great, but solid enough to be watchable. 11 Minutes. 3 Stars.

Backstage, Lita questions Jeff if he's noticed a change in Matt. Jeff believes Matt is just stressed out over everything. Matt comes out of his lockerroom and hypes Team Xtreme up. Hardyz leave to have their match as Lita opens the door to their lockerroom. Out comes Trish fixing her hair. Hmm.

The Hardy Boyz (c) vs The Dudley Boyz (c) - WCW/WWF Tag Team Unification Cage Match
Not much of a storyline other than these two teams were the best either side had. The winners becomes the WWF/WCW tag team champions. For years, I've been confused as to what team held which title. In the entrances, The Dudleys held the WCW tag titles, but was said to be the WWF tag team champions. The same problem happens with the Hardys. On the back of the DVD, it says the Duds are the WCW tag champs and the Hardyz, the WWF. I believe the Duds held the WWF titles while Hardyz held the WCW. Matt and Bubba starts off. I never understood why the non-legal men stays on the apron. It's not as if you can be DQ'd The Hardyz hit a couple of tag moves. Bubba gets a two after a huge slam on Jeff. D-Von gets tagged in and takes a dropkick for his troubles. Matt takes a Saving Grace (I think that's what D-Von called his finisher in 2002) for a two. D-Von connects with his trademark twisting elbow. Tag to Bubba. Matt plays the face-in-peril. Matt finally comes back with a reverse DDT to Bubba. Jeff gets the (Not really) hot tag. Poetry in Motion to Bubba. All four men are now in. D-Von takes a Poetry in Motion. The Hardyz climb up, but the Duds stop them. It's a double battle on the top rope. Matt with a top rope Side Russian Leg Sweep to D-Von. Bubba connects with a top rope Bubba Bomb to Jeff. Matt gets a two on Bubba after throwing him from the top rope. Jeff is still down allowing the Dudleys to double team Matt. Matt is pancaked into the cage. Bubba tries launching Jeff into the cage, but Jeff pulls off a Spiderman trick by grabbing onto the cage. Bubba grabs him and pulls him off on his shoulders. DOOMSDAY DEVICE~! And the Dudley's once again tries to imitate the Road Warriors. Dudleys with their reversed 3D. Matt breaks up the fall. Matt is between the ropes and the cage so the Dudleys takes turns splashing him. Nice. Jeff tastes cage. The Dudleyz tries to be highflyers, but they miss the Headbutt and TNT Legdrop. Matt connects with a top rope double closeline. Matt with a hangman neckbreaker that would make Hawk proud. Matt and Jeff shows the Dudleyz how to fly with their dual Legdrop/splash to Bubba. Matt begins climbing the cage. D-Von joins him and catches Matt causing him to fall. WAZZZZUP~!!. Bubba calls for a table so Stacey flirts her way into Nick Patrick's pocket for the cage door. A table is now in side of a cage. Duds try to 3D Jeff through the table, but Matt closelines Bubba and Jeff counters D-Von into a DDT. Matt and Bubba are fighting at the top of the cage. Matt sends Bubba falling down to the mat. Matt escapes the cage. Jeff covers Bubba, but Bubba gets a shoulder up at two. Jeff is all alone with both heels. Jeff throws D-Von face first into the cage a few times. Jeff escapes D-Von and climbs up the cage. D-Von with a last ditch effort to save the match, climbs on top of the cage to lure Jeff back. Jeff spots D-Von and can't resist. SWANTON BOMB from the top of the cage, but D-Von moves out of the way sending Jeff crashing through the table. WHAT A FUCKING MORON. Bubba covers the downed Hardy and gets the three count becoming the unified tag team champions. By this point, both sets of brothers had faced each other so many times that all of the matches resembled each other. Lack of storytelling is made up with their typical spots that gets the crowd to their feet. It was a fun match, but it's just the same old shit. This would begin Matt's heel turn because he's upset with what Jeff did. Now, how does that make Matt a heel? Jeff was the dumbass who cost the Hardyz the win. However, I suppose that just goes to show that the fans have always just preferred Jeff. Which is why even after all of his "Personal Demons", Jeff has been a World Champion and Matt hasn't and doesn't look to happen anytime soon. Fun Fact - This is match two of the Hardy/Dudleyz bipolar relationship at Survivor Series. At the previous Survivor Series, they were partners. At this one, their opponents. By next year, partners again. 16 Minutes. 3 1/4 Stars.

Backstage, Scotty is heading out to the ring for the battle royal. Test jumps him after confirming that Scotty was in the battle royal.

Immunity Battle Royal
The winner here gets an one year guarantee that they won't be fired, regardless of the outcome of the main event. Representing the WWF are The APA, Crash Holly, Perry Saturn, Spike, Albert, Funaki, Billy Gunn, Chuck Palumbo. Representing the Alliance are Raven, The Hurricane, Kidman, Shawn Stasiak, Steven Richards, DDP, Lance Storm, Justin Credible, Tommy Dreamer and now Test. Lance Storm and Justin Credible leads the entrance for the Alliance which makes me wish the WWF would of had them team together some. The APA leads the WWF's C-Level wrestlers. Stasiak starts it off by running at Bradshaw so JBL just throws Shawn out. Tazz joins the match without any alliagance. Heyman can't believe it. So that makes 20, with one man eliminated. Test is just walking around on the outside of the ring, not eliminated. Hurricane flies, but is caught by Faarooq. Bradshaw closelines him over the top rope. That's 2 for JBL. Albert presses Saturn over the top rope. Test ducks and allows Faarooq to fall out of the ring. DDP is eliminated by Chuck. The Impact Players hits a double superkick to eliminate Chuck. Chavo Guerrero and Hugh Morris hits the ring. Both were fired by the alliance and Vince didn't want them. Funaki is eliminated by the outsiders. Hugh Morris is out of the ring and Billy presses Chavo onto Morris, eliminating him. Tazz eliminates Richards and Crash Holly. Spike is out of the ring. Richards takes a closeline from Hell...okay I guess he wasn't eliminated. JBL throws him out. Okay, now he is. Tazz yells at Heyman, so Billy throws him out. Albert is eliminated. JBL gives Kidman a Last Call OVER THE TOP ROPE. We're down to 4 men. Storm and Test for the Alliance and Canada. Billy Gunn and Bradshaw for the WWF and ass raping. Heyman and JR becomes bored so they talk about Stephanie McMahon. Billy skins the cat to stay in the match. Test eliminates Storm and Bradshaw. He thinks he's won until Billy hits him. Billy goes for the Fame-Ass-Er, but Test gives him a Big Boot to knock him out. Test wins and keeps his job for a full year. It's a battle royal, it's pretty much exactly what you'd expect. Too many men to get any real moves. There were a few different storylines going on during the match at least. Bradshaw and Billy continues to receive the treatment of the top C guys. Once Test attacked Scotty, it was fairly obvious who was going to win the match. It's really a shame to see such major players early on such as Storm and DDP neglected to a nothing battle royal. DDP should of been in the main event and Storm a regular match. 8 Minutes. 2 Stars.

Trish Stratus vs Lita vs Jacqueline vs Mighty Molly vs Ivory vs Jazz - Women's Title Match
After Chyna grew a huge ego and demanded Austin money for her new contract, she was promptly fired. Being the Women's Champion at the time, the title was vacated. The WWE just chose to forget all about the title. Each side has three women, with Jazz making her WWE debut unofficially, but officially for the Alliance. I have to admit, I marked out when I first saw this match and that Jazz was in the WWE. Jazz starts the match by instantly attacking Lita. Fuck yeah. Jazz with a butterfly suplex to Lita. Lita with a head scissors to Jazz. Jazz tags in Molly and Jackie is tagged by Lita. Jackie shows off her technical skills in slow-mo. Tag into Ivory, but she's met with a dropkick. Jackie and Ivory goes for the multiple pin attempts that doesn't exactly scream out Savage vs Steamboat. Trish is tagged in and gets a nice pop. Ivory sucks at kicking. The Alliance women triple team Trish. I doubt that's the first time Trish has been tripled teamed. Jackie and Lita works in a Poetry in Motion to Jazz. They go for it again, but Jackie turns on Lita. Molly with a Molly-Go-Round. Lita throws in a Twist of Fate and a Moonsault to Ivory. Jazz breaks up the pin. Lita double closelines Molly and Jazz. Lita gets a nice chant, but can't throw a decent punch. Trish tosses Lita out of the ring. Jazz is throws out of the ring leaving Trish and Ivory alone. Stratusfaction bulldog to Ivory and Trish wins the belt and thus begins her push as a serious wrestler. With the talent of Jazz and Molly, it seems like a waste to give the belt to Trish. But at least Jazz has made her debut and we'd see more of her in the coming months. Plenty of botches as expected in a women's match, but with so many women, they were able to make it fun with spots. Fun enough. 5 Minutes. 2 1/4 Stars.

Team WWF vs Team Alliance - Classic Survivor Series Match
Here we go, the losing team will see their company gone forever (Unless you're ECW). Team Alliance is comprised of WWF Champion, Steve Austin; 5-Time WCW Champion, Booker T; WWF Hardcore Champion, Rob Van Dam; WWF Turncoat, Kurt Angle; and WCW Owner, Shane McMahon. Team WWF has WCW World Champion, The Rock; Former WCW World Champion, Chris Jericho; former WCW/WWF Tag Team Champions, The Undertaker and Kane; and former WCW/WWF Champion (Only one on this entire show that held the titles in the actual companies) The Big Show. Originally, Vince McMahon was scheduled to be the fifth man, but then he smarten up and realized that a 7 foot, 500 pound giant would be a better partner for the team. Shane decided against replacing himself. DDP Who? Austin and Rock starts it off trading blows. Lou Thesz Press by Austin. Rock returns the favor with his own. Shane breaks up the cover at one. JR - "Shane McMahon getting jiggy with it." Uh...ok. Booker is tagged in and we get some more Summerslam action. McMahon once again breaks up the fall. Jericho and Rock has perhaps the most gay tag ever. Jericho just manhandles Booker. RVD is tagged in and gets a HUGE pop. These two had a great match at Unforgiven. Jericho nails a Spinning Heel Kick. Trading in forearms. Big Show shows what kind of Jericho mark he is by screaming louder than anyone else when Chris chops RVD. RVD tries a hurricrana, but gets a Walls of Jericho. Shane once again breaks it up. Angle and Kane are tagged in. This is a future WM meeting. Kane gives Angle a few uppercuts. German Suplex to Kane. Kane sits up and takes some more punches. Kane heads up to the top rope and nails the closeline. Shane breaks it up at one. Tag to The American Badass. Booker comes in, but continues his role as the personal bitch to the WWF that he's had since coming into the company. Shane breaks up yet another pin attempt. Crowd - "Shane's a pussy *Clap Clap* Shane's a pussy." HA. OLD SCHOOL. Taker works over Booker's arm. Booker just can't get any offense going in the match. Shane breaks up a pin attempt. Austin is tagged in and we get a showing of Backlash. Loud "What?!" chants. Taker with another Old School. Shane breaks it up. Booker is tagged in, But Angle ignores it and steals the spotlight. Of course, Angle gets in some offense. Angle takes a DDT. Tag to the Big Show. Loud chop in the corner. Down go the straps, Show means business. RVD runs in, but gets a closeline. Show presses RVD and hits the rest of the Alliance off the apron. ANGLE SLAM~! Booker tagged in and gets a scissors kick to Show. Spinaroonie. RVD tagged in and connects with the 5-Star Frogsplash. Tag to Shane, Top rope elbow. Shane covers and pins Show. Shane dances around not knowing that the Rock is now in the ring. Punches in the corner. Rock tags in Kane telling the Big Red Machine to Chokeslame Shane. CHOKESLAM! Tag to Taker. TOMBSTONE~!!! Tag to Jericho. Lionsault~! Jericho covers and easily eliminates McMahon.

4-4 now. Angle comes in and we get some nice Jericho/Angle action. Doublearmed backbreaker to Angle. Angle tags in Booker. Booker bodyslams Jericho three times. I guess Booker is only allowed one offensive move. Booker tags to RVD. Several kicks to Jericho. Jericho gets a rollup for the two on Van Dam. Tag into Kane. Future Tag Team Champions together in the ring. Kane closelines Mr. Monday Night. Kane decides to throw Booker in and gives a big boot. Damn, Booker doesn't even need to be in the ring to get attacked. 5 Star Frogsplash!!! RVD covers Kane, but Kane chokes RVD. Everyone brawls on the outside allowing RVD to hit the kick from the top rope to eliminate Kane. Taker in now giving us a preview of next month. Booker crawls in the ring, but gets attacked as usual. Austin tries to come in, but gets attacked by Taker. Same goes for Angle. Taker hits closelines in the corner to all four Alliance members. Snake Eyes and Closeline to Angle. Taker calls for the Last Ride. Last Ride connects, but Booker comes in the ring with a chair. The distraction allows Austin to hit the Stunner on Taker. Austin drags Angle onto Taker eliminating him.

4-2 now. Jericho and Rock are all alone. Book and Rock together. Loud 'Rocky' chant. Rock punches, but gets met with an Axe Kick. Rock nails a DDT, but Angle breaks up the fall. Booker runs into a Samoan Drop, but Austin interrupts the fall. Rock gets a rollup on Booker for the surprise pinfall. Booker is eliminated with a fuckin rollup?! RVD in now. Arguably the two most popular men in the match. Rock gets a two after a powerbomb-like move from the top rope. Jericho tagged in. Swinging neckbreaker by Jericho. Jericho chops RVD in the corner to 'WOO' chants. RVD nails a standing spinning heel kick. Jericho is seen and heard talking to RVD. JR tries saying he was talking to himself. Jericho with the Breakdown pins RVD.

2-2 now. To no surprise, all of the guys who weren't in the WWF before the Invasion began are gone. Austin sends Rock flying into the post on the outside. Angle has a headlock on Jericho. Tag to Austin. Boot to Jericho. More 'Woo' chants following chops. Austin sets Jericho up on the top turnbuckle for a Superplex. Jericho is able to kick out at two. Awkward spot as Austin just runs by Jericho. Angle is tagged back into the match. More Jericho as the face-in-peril. Angle attempts a German Suplex, but Jericho rolls him up into an Ankle Lock. Angle is able to get the tag to Austin. More face-in-peril. Hot tag to ROCK~!. Rock locks Angle into the Sharpshooter and Angle taps out. Heyman is going crazy. Jericho tags himself back in. Crossbody is rolled through and gets Austin a two. Jericho counters a Lou Thesz into a Walls of Jericho attempt. Austin attempts the Boston Crab to little success. Austin's mouth is bleeding. Austin gets the knees up to block a Lionsault. That only gets a two. Missile Dropkick to Austin. ONE...TWO...NO! Austin kicks out. Jericho gets another rollup, but Austin rolls out and gets the surprise pin to Jericho. Jericho is eliminated.

1-1 now. Next fall wins. Jericho hits the Breakdown on Rock before leaving the ring. HEEL TURN~!!!1! Austin covers...ONE...TWO...NO! Rock kicks out. Jericho heads back to the ring to finish Rocky off. Taker runs out and sends Jericho backtracking to the lockerroom. Austin gives Rock some boots. Austin and Hebner trades some words allowing Rock to get back to his feet. Rock is sent over the top rope and his leg crashes against the Spanish announce table. Rock is sent headfirst into the post. Rock sends Austin over the Spanish announce table. Rocky jumps over the table on Austin. Loud 'Rocky' chant again. Spinebuster by Austin. SHARPSHOOTER!! Rocky crawls to the ropes to break the hold. Austin heads out to bring in the WWE title. Rock blocks a title shot. Sharpshooter to Austin! Great image of Austin clutching the WWF title while trying to get the ropes. Rock pulls Austin away from the ropes to keep the Sharpshooter on. Austin makes it to the other ropes forcing Rock to finally break up the Sharpshooter. Austin gets a low blow to Rock. Rock counters a Stunner for his own Stunner. Rock covers. ONE...TWO...NO! Nick Patrick pulls the ref out of the ring. Rock goes to Rock Bottom Patrick, but Austin pulls him away to hit his own Rock Bottom! Austin covers. ONE...TWO...NO! Rock kicks out. Austin argues with Patrick and decks him out of the ring. Austin drags Hebner back into the ring. Austin goes for the Stunner, but Rock shoves Austin into the ref. STUNNER!!!! Austin covers, but the ref is still down. Austin tries to wake up the ref as Kurt Angle hits the ring. Angle with belt in hand nails Austin with it. FACE TURN~!!!! Austin walks right into the Rock Bottom. Rock covers and Hebner slows counts three. Austin is eliminated and Team WWF wins. For the first time this night, Heyman is speechless. Vince McMahon comes out and throws his jacket down and his arms up in victory. McMahon unhappy with just beating the WCW and ECW once, has just booked himself to beat them again for the second time in a year. EGOMANIA is running wild!!!!1! The Survivor Series elimination match has been poorly booked for years. However, this one finally creates another well booked and great match. The match got plenty of time and showcased several storylines. Shane has a fun segment of interfering only to have everyone to hit their finishers on him. Jericho turns heel. Angle turns face for the night. And Austin unoffically tuns face by his actions. The final segment of Rock vs Austin is the same quality they had been producing at Wrestlemania and Rebellion. My only real problem was how badly Booker T was treated. But that problem aside, while the match didn't feel like WCW and ECW was truly represented, the match was still great. One of my favorites in Survivor Series history. 45 Minutes. 4 1/2 Stars.

Overall
This is one of those rare shows that while the action was good, it failed on many levels. In what was supposed to be the final PPV for the ECW and WCW angle, it felt more like a regular WWE PPV. Match after match, it was WWE wrestler vs WWE wrestler. Meanwhile, the true Alliance wrestlers are thrown in a battle royal that is won by a WWE guy. The main event may of featured two non-WWE guys, but the one was treated as a jobber while the final four was all WWE. The entire storyline can be summed up in one little moment. McMahon's post match celebration just goes to show that this storyline was just one huge pat on his back. The problem with this entire show is that nothing really sticks. Every Alliance guy eventually is brought back by Rumble time or at least for the draft. So in essence, this was pointless. Rant aside, you do get the final MOTYC of the year with the main event. That alone is worth checking the show out. Everything else is what you'd already seen a hundred times or just wasn't given enough time to be anything really special. With the quality of the matches, it's probably the forth best PPV of the year (Behind the other big four). However, the biggest compliment I can give is that I'd probably rank it as the best Survivor Series of this decade.

Best Match: Team WWF vs Team Alliance
Worst Match:Immunity Battle Royal

Overall Grade: B+

Re: WWE Survivor Series 2001 Review

All I will say is that I thought the main event was a total borefest up until the Rock/Austin part, and even that was nothing special.

Better than the Invasion 5 vs 5, but that's not saying much at all.

Re: WWE Survivor Series 2001 Review

I liked the match, but 4 1/2 stars seems like the most generous rating you've ever handed out. It was decent but it wasn't a great match by any means. I enjoyed the show as a mark though.

Re: WWE Survivor Series 2001 Review

I never thought I'd be accused of overrated an Attitude Era main event. Underrate sure.

I've always been a fan of the match. I loved the short lived team of the Rock and Jericho, meanwhile, Shane was used very well. To top it off with a nice ending sequence between the Rock and Austin who literally couldn't put on a bad match with each other in 2001. With how the Invasion storyline went, it made sense to end with those two. If a match can make me mark out like I'm 7 again, it'll always receive a good rating, regardless of how others view the match.

I am surprised to find that I'm alone in my love for the match.

Re: WWE Survivor Series 2001 Review

2001 wasn't really attitude era, was it? I don't even think Meltzer, king of overating big matches, gave it that high of a rating.

The Jericho/Rock interaction was fine, as was the Rock/Austin part, though the majority of the in-ring action is such a chore to rewatch. For a huge tag match with that length, there is hardly any direction to it. Not nearly enough substance to keep it interesting, I can't remember many face-in-peril parts or anything like that which makes those sorts of matches watchable. Also, alot of the eliminations were really poorly done.

I liked it when I watched it at the time because I was younger and actually got drawn into "OMG THE WWE COULD LOSE", but rewatching it was a big chore for me, personally. It also featured the fucking annoying JR/Heyman squabling through the whole thing to the point where I wanted to just mute them.

Idk, just like the start of the Attitude Era, the end has people split as well. I'd consider it the prologue of it.

Jericho played the face-in-peril a lot once it got down to two-on-two. Before that, not so much. But there was never any real need for it since everyone was still fairly fresh. No to mention the WWF was in control for most of the early going with Shane always saving the day.

I loved the whole Heyman/Ross interaction, especially at the end when JR is just ripping Heyman a new one with his celebrating.

Re: WWE Survivor Series 2001 Review

I thought JR's reaction to the finish was great, but hearing them bicker through the entire match rather than actually call it was so irritating. For me atleast it makes rewatching matches from that time a pain.

Re: WWE Survivor Series 2001 Review

Maybe it's because I'm so use to shitty commentating from JR and Lawler, but it was refreshing to get something different with Heyman with Ross.

Re: WWE Survivor Series 2001 Review

I actually loved the match myself. Maybe ****1/4 or so. Was so good. Shane's part was so much fun, even the way he got eliminated. Of course Jericho/Rock fighting everyone off and all the swerves made it epic fun.

It was more enjoyable the first time, sure, but it was really fun to watch even now.

Re: WWE Survivor Series 2001 Review

I'm with Jim on the commentary. I enjoyed Heyman throughout his run as commentator in WWF. I personally feel the whole face/heel arguments in commentary are one of the things that are missing in current WWE. It is so boring when both are just agreeing all the time. TNA have the right idea in turning West heel, he just sucks at it.
