Had this poll been made as recent as 2006, I would most likely have given the nod to Samoa Joe. The man had pretty much conquered US pro wrestling outside of the WWE. While Dave Metlzer is just one fan, the fact that Joe has been in 3 out of the 4 US 5 star matches this decade is a huge accomplishment. Joe's the guy who really helped legitimize the ROH World title as being something higher than just another indy title. Meanwhile, he was one of the main reasons why people treat TNA in 2005 as such a great year.
However, the past few years haven't been kind to Joe. He's no longer the wrestler you can expect to put on a great match. He's lost all of the aura of greatness that he had in ROH. Meanwhile, Dragon has been busy busting his ass in the last few years. ROH has been putting on more shows than ever and Danielson has been delivering. No matter what company he's wrestling for, Danielson can be expected to deliver.
So it's pretty much a matter of what's greater. A guy who at one time was great or a guy who's been very good for years, but in the past few years has been phenomenal?
I'm going with Danielson, but Joe would of been my pick a couple years ago.

I couldn't agree more with your post. Joe was the biggest name on the independent circuit in 2005 and seemed like he had classic matches with everyone. But unfortunately he just cant produce in TNA, probably just the way they use him though.
When it comes to pure, scientific wrestling, I cant put Joe ahead of Danielson. But at his height, Joe masterfully incorporated striking, grappling, and technical wrestling better than just about anyone.
Really? No one is going to make a case for Joe here? I'd say up until 2006 he could more than give Danielson a run for his money.
I mean, I think it's obvious Dragon is better, but I'm actually surprised no one has made the case for Joe at all.
I said how I would of voted for Joe a couple of years ago. It's just really hard to make a case for Joe when he's so clearly dropped in quality in the past few years.

Given that we're taking careers as a whole, their best seems very comparable. What makes the difference is that is doesn't seem like Danielson has had a long "meh" streak like Joe over the past couple of years.

Although Joe has obvious deteriorated somewhat, I feel that it is largely due to the fact that he is in TNA that he struggles. All through his reign he was facing terrible opponents, more often than not in terrible gimmick matches, and now he has been given a terrible angle. We can all see that he is out of shape and nobody is claiming that he is as good today as he was in 2005-6, but I'm pretty sure that even Danielson would struggle to produce notable matches in 2009 TNA. Whether that is relevant to the question of who is better in another story, and even if it was, Danielson is still easily the better of the two due to the fact that he has continued to produce great matches consistently. While Joe has become noticeably worse, Danielson has seemingly gone from strength to strength.
I just thought that even though I am voting for Danielson, I should say SOMETHING to defend him. I mean its TNA for fucks sake.
