Re: Memory Lane: Ohio Valley Wrestling 2005: Future of WWE

January 1st, 2005: Ohio Valley Wrestling
From: Louisville, KY

This is a repeat from a OVW show in 2004. This was shown so that OVW members could enjoy the holidays.

The show quickly opens up with Danny Inferno taking on Chris Cage. A rather slow start the contest with mat wrestling on Cage’s part. Cage really controls Inferno and dropkicks Inferno to the floor, who attempts to leave the ringside area. Inferno gains control following a distraction from his valet Trudy and drops Cage’s left arm across the top rope. Inferno proceeds to work on Cage’s left arm. Mid ring collision takes both men down. Cage with a flurry of offense with a arm trap neck breaker. Inferno with a single arm DDT to Cage’s bad left arm. Cage finishes Inferno off with a forward DDT drop.

Jim Cornette introduces stills from last week where MNM defeated Mac Johnson and Seth Skyfire to win the OVW Southern Tag Team Championships. For the highlights shown, it appears to be a rather good contest. In a hilarious turn of events, Matthews gets brass knuckles from FROSTY the SNOWMAN and nails Mac Johnson. MNM end up winning. Also, it was Melina dressed up as Frosty, so that makes sense.

After a break, MNM come out for a interview segment. Melina looks really good compared to nowadays in my opinion. Cornette brings up the usage of Frosty the Snowman and how dastardly that is. Nitro makes zero sense when he gets the microphone. Matthews mentions that MNM quarter hour is the highest hour in WB history. Melina puts his guys over and Nitro says they will be champions for as long as they want. Matthews says they don’t care who they are going to face. Matthews brings up their thirty day clause where they have to defend the straps only once every thirty days. Melina and Nitro proceed to make out as Matthews takes “snap shots”.

Time for some Womens action. Passion and Alexis Laree (Mickie James) take on Jillian Hall and her bodyguard Melissa Coats. Laree controls Hall early on and this causes Hall to tag out. Coates has a clear problem running the ropes as she goes very slowly. Coates uses her size to control Laree and Hall enters to actually deliver wrestling moves. Laree takes Hall down with a hurricanrana and tags in Passion. Passion spikes Hall with a DDT but only gets a near fall. Passion is shoved off the top rope by Coats. Hall connects with a cartwheel splash on Passion to pick up the win.

Kenny Bolin
, and Mike Mondo bring out Blaster Lashley. Cornette interviews Kenny Bolin. Bolin puts over all of Lashley’s awards. Bolin says that he has signed Lashley to the biggest contract in Bolin Services history. Mondo cuts a promo and says that Lashley is by far the biggest man he has worked with. You could really call him Sgt. Mondo. His gimmick is as a drill instructor. Bolin says Lashley is undefeated. Bolin says he will be issuing a open challenge to any man. Bolin will offer any wrestler who can last a minute or longer will get one hundred dollars per minute. Lashley never utters a word.

Jim Cornette shows OVW’s article in the local newspaper. We also see footage from last week where OVW Heavyweight Champion Chris Cage took on Chad Tolland. Blueprint Matt Morgan viciously attacks Cage before the match by slamming Cage on the floor. Morgan places Cage’s left arm between a chair and stomps on the arm. Cage was able to have his match with Chad Tolland for the OVW Heavyweight Championship. Tank Tolland is on the floor in a wheelchair as if he is crippled and it looks quite funny. Cage clotheslines a wheelchair confined Tank on the floor. Tank manages to kick out of a pin attempt and sends Cage shoulder first into the turnbuckle and rolls cage up with a handful of tights for the win.

Back to the show, Chad Tolland defends the OVW Heavyweight Championship against Elijah Burke. Tank is with Chad again and he now has his legs in casts from the attack last week. Burke gets a really good reception from the crowd. Burke with several pin attempts early on but Chad kicks out every time. Burke misses a cross body coming off the ropes which allows Chad to send Burke to the floor where Tank Tolland is trying to kick Burke on the floor, but is unable to because of the casts on his legs. Burke battles back and connects with a DDT on Chad. Burke with a few clotheslines and forearm smash. Burke nearly wins with a sit out spine buster. Tank gives Chad a chain and Chad nails Burke with the chain, but Burke still kicks out. Burke dropkicks Chad into the referee. Blueprint Matt Morgan plants Burke with a Death Valley Driver. Chris Cage runs down and brawls with Morgan. Chad goes for the cover, but Burke again kicks out. Tank Tolland gets out of his wheelchair and is going crazy, proving he was lying. Chad baseballs slides Tank down and Elijah rolls Chad up for the win and title. Several baby faces come down to celebrate with Burke.

Quick Results

Chris Cage defeated Danny Inferno
Jillian Hall/Melissa Coats defeated Passion/Alexis Laree
Elijah Burke defeated Chad Tolland to win the OVW Heavyweight Championship

My Take:
Cage/Inferno wasn’t too bad, actually. For this being the first time I have ever watched OVW, there is something about Danny Inferno that is entertaining. He certainly has a wrestlers look. Matthews needs to be the promo guy for MNM at this point. Jillian Hall clearly got a boob job, for the record. The women’s tag team match wasn’t awful or anything but it wasn’t that great either. Coats was clearly the one who couldn’t work all that well. She kind of reminded me of Nicole Bass, but she isn’t as tall as Bass. The whole Bolin Service segment kind of dragged on for a little while. Clearly Lashley wasn’t able to talk back then as he just stood their flexing, really. Burke isn’t ready to the champion, based on his skills at this point. The crowd does seem to love him, though. Pretty solid show.

7/10

Re: Memory Lane: Ohio Valley Wrestling 2005: Future of WWE

January 8th, 2005: Ohio Valley Wrestling
From: Louisville, KY

To start off the show, Ken Doane takes on Aaron Stevens. Stevens is one egotistical fellow. Doane with the early advantage until Stevens cheap shots Doane was the referee tried to break them up in the corner. Doane takes Stevens down with a couple of clotheslines followed by a spinning leg lariat for a near fall. Doane nearly wins with a kick to Stevens head. Doane misses the “Doanation” reverse bulldog. Stevens with a swinging neck breaker for the win.

Cornette introduces the closing moments of Elijah Burke winning the OVW Heavyweight Championship. We also get some footage after the match that wasn’t seen last week. Burke puts over that winning the belt was his dream. Burke says that the belt is not only his, but all of the fans as well. Burke puts over OVW and everyone involved with the company.

After a break, OVW Heavyweight Champion Elijah Burke makes his way down to the ring for an interview. Cornette is going to ask Burke who he would like to face first, and before he can say anything Blueprint Matt Morgan comes down to the ring. Morgan calls Burke a “chump”. Morgan says he is the most dominant champion of all time. Morgan puts over the fact he has beaten Chris Benoit. Morgan believes Burke can not beat him. Chris Cage heads down to the ring to confront Morgan. Cage reminds Morgan than he beat Morgan. Cage says it wasn’t a fluke when he beat Morgan. Cage says that he deserves a title shot. Here comes Chad and Tank Tolland. Tank is still in a wheelchair even though he clearly is not injured. Tank brings up that he was the number one contender before Cage attacked him. Cage has enough and chases Tank to the backstage area. Morgan proceeds to drop Burke with the Death Valley Driver. Cage heads down to the ring with a chair to protect Burke.

Cornette announces that next week, Elijah Burke will defend the OVW Heavyweight Championship against Blueprint Matt Morgan. Also, Chris Cage will take on Chad and Tank Tolland in a handicap match. This is when Morris heads over and is clearly trying to be the Godfather. Morris says that he is rich. Morris introduces the Heartbreakers. The Heartbreakers are Antonio Thomas and Romeo Roselli. They are clearly a teasing homosexual tag team. The women in attendance love them.

The debuting Heartbreakers will take on Steve Lewington and Nick Nemeth. Lewington is DJ Gabriel. This is a really bad match about three minutes in. It comes across as if Lewington is still trying to learn moves and whatnot. The pace to the match is awful. Nemeth nearly wins following a super kick on Thomas. Romeo pins Nemeth following a double inverted leg sweep.

Jim Cornette introduces the Bolin Service which consists of Kenny Bolin, Mike Mondo and Blaster Lashley. Bolin says that he can’t find anyone to accept the open challenge. Bolin goes explains the “dollar a minute challenge.” Someone has accepted the challenge. That man is Clift Compton.

Blaster Lashley
takes on Clift Compton in the challenge. Lashley finishes Compton off with a running power slam in thirty six seconds.

This editions main event is for the OVW Southern Tag Team Championships. MNM defend against the Thrill Seekers (Johnny Jeter and Matt Cappotelli). Jeter and Cappotelli control the early portion of the match controlling Matthews with a series of moves including a hurricanrana. MNM decide to bail from the ring and head to the backstage area, but are stopped by the Seekers. Matthews shoves Jeter off the top and Jeter falls to the floor. Jeter is controlled with a double team backbreaker by MNM. Jeter takes MNM down with a cross body and Cappotelli gets the hot tag. Jeter prevents MNM from delivering the snap shot on Cappotelli by super kicking Matthews. Matthews rolls back into the ring and sends Cappotelli over the top rope causing the disqualification. Mac Johnson and Seth Skyfire run down and help Jeter and Cappotelli

Quick Results

Aaron “Idol” Stevens defeated Ken Doane
The Heartbreakers defeated Steve Lewington/Nick Nemeth
Blaster Lashley defeated Clift Compton
The Thrill Seekers defeated MNM via disqualification. MNM retain the OVW Southern Tag Team Championships

My Take: Stevens/Doane wasn’t that great. Though, I can see that Stevens is a very good heel. Within the first twenty minutes of the show, Burke had to have been seen at least half of those minutes. The whole segment with Burke, Morgan, Cage and the Tolland’s was nicely done. However, it proved that neither Morgan or Cage are good promo guys. The Heartbreakers appear to be a entertaining tag team, and the crowd instantly liked them, even thought I believe they are suppose to be heels. That match just was awful. Lashley’s match was obviously just a easy way to get him over, so it made sense. Main event was a solid match that I feel should be given some more time down the road.

Re: Memory Lane: Ohio Valley Wrestling 2005: Future of WWE

The show quickly opens with Danny Inferno taking on Steve Lewington. Inferno starts the match with a popsicle stick in his mouth. Evenly contested contest early on but Inferno controls Lewington after Trudy distracts Lewington. Inferno drops Lewington with a big clothesline after a brief comeback from Lewington. Inferno misses a top rope elbow drop and Lewington finishes Inferno off with a arm trap neck breaker.

Jim Cornette introduces the final moments of the OVW Southern Tag Team Championship match from last week between MNM and the Thrill Seekers. After the video, Cornette introduces MNM for a interview. MNM now have people holding up pictures of MNM during the promo. Matthews puts themselves over as being fighting champions compared to Skyfire and Johnson. Nitro says that next week they will give a rematch to Seth and Mac. Melina with a rather terrible promo putting over her men, the microphone didn’t help the cause as it was cutting out it seemed.

Morris is in the ring and he introduces the Heartbreakers who will be facing Seth Skyfire and Mac Johnson. Skyfire controls Romeo with a standing moonsault a few minutes into the match. MNM come down to ringside and ram Johnson ribs first into the ring post. Heartbreakers finish Skyfire with a reverse leg sweep for a huge win.

Video of the confrontation between OVW Heavyweight Champion Elijah Burke and Blueprint Matt Morgan. Basically the whole segment is shown all over again.

The first of two main events is next when The Tolland’s take on Chris Cage in a handicap match. Tank Tolland continues to sell a rib injury. Chris Cage comes out wearing street clothes. Cage hurt himself during a WWE house show. Cage isn’t able to wrestle tonight. Cage introduces…. Mark Henry who gets a pretty good reception. Chad attempts a German suplex on Henry but that obviously doesn’t work. Tank refuses to tag in. Henry slams Chad off the top rope to the canvas. Tank distracts Henry and Chad low blows Chad. Cage nails Chad with a crutch and Henry splashes Chad for the win.

The Bolin Service come down to the ring for another open challenge. Blaster Lashley takes on Robbie Dawber. Lashley finishes Robbie off in forty six seconds with a running power slam.

Time for the main event with Elijah Burke defending the OVW Heavyweight Championship taking on the Blueprint Matt Morgan. Burke uses his speed advantage by dropkicking Morgan to the floor. Burke slams Morgan head first against the announcers table. Morgan nails Burke with a big boot on the floor. Morgan works on Burke for a few moments but Burke battles back and takes Morgan down with a forearm smash. Morgan connects with a side walk slam and nearly wins the belt. Burke connects with a elbow drop off the top and only gets a two count. Burke plants Morgan with a X-Factor on the championship, that Morgan brought into the ring, and picks up the win.

Quick Results:

Steve Lewington defeated Danny Inferno
The Heartbreakers defeated Mac Johnson/Seth Skyfire
Mark Henry defeated The Tolland’s in a handicap match
Blaster Lashley defeated Robbie Dawber in a open challenge match
Elijah Burke defeated Blueprint Matt Morgan to retain the OVW Heavyweight Championship

My Take:
Not a fan of Lewington, he just seems really bland. While, Danny Inferno is one entertaining man. MNM costing Johnson/Skyfire their match makes a lot of sense and was carried out well. there is no way that the Heartbreakers are going to lose so early in their OVW careers. To say I was shocked at how big a reception Mark Henry got would be a under statement. Chris Cage needs to avoid a microphone. Burke/Morgan was a pretty good contest, Morgan works very well in OVW.

7/10
