Wrestling Thoughts: Second Edition

Wrestling Thoughts: Second Edition

I’ve been watching quite a bit of old school WCW and I can’t help but think of that era. there is one situation that especially makes me scratch my head. That situation would be when Ron Simmons won the WCW World Heavyweight Championship in August of 1992. I’m not saying that he shouldn’t have won the championship by any means, I was and still am a Ron Simmons fan. However, the reasoning he won the championship makes me wonder.

As many people know Bill Watts, who was the head booker at the time, was known to be a racist. Minus the fact that while in Mid South he did push African American wrestlers. Back in WCW their was never a African American world champion. Watts was getting heat for that fact and so in order to perhaps have people back off Watts put the championship on Ron Simmons. Though, Simmons sure wasn’t treated as “the guy”.

Simmons was really never involved in the top feud in the company. Throughout his title run he was in a feud with Cactus Jack, The Barbarian, Butch Reed and Tony Atlas. The feud was more driven towards Simmons/Jack with Jack bringing in the latter people to try and take the belt away from Simmons. Simmons was being treated as a mid-card guy while supposing to be the top guy. Simmons would meet Barbarian, a lower mid-card guy at Halloween Havoc 1992 for the belt. No, it was not the main event. The main event was Sting and Jake Roberts in the ever so unpopular coal miners glove match.

The reign for Simmons would end in late December when he lost the belt back to Vader. Simmons would be soon forgotten on WCW television. Simmons didn’t wrestle on Super Brawl, Slamboree, Fall Brawl, Halloween Havoc or Starrcade. A former WCW champion was simply ignored and forgotten. Simmons did return to WCW television in 1994 to feud with well…. Ice Train. That’s right, Ice Train the big fellow who would make a train sound coming to the ring. Talk about a fall from grace.

Basically, I believe this has to be one of if not the only time I have ever witnessed a world champion be treated as a under card guy.

How dumb are the writing members on RAW? See, I like the fact that they brought up the past, something they very rarely do. But, when you have misinformation of the past, it makes the guys involved look stupid. HHH brought up how HHH beat Orton at Unforgiven 2004. Great, good bring up Evolution. That’s when HHH says that Orton is still bothered at the fact that Orton never was able to beat HHH for the belt. Wrong. Didn’t Orton defeated HHH at No Mercy a couple of years ago? Isn’t that how the whole “Age of Orton” angle began? That right their hurts that history lesson.

Don’t get me wrong, I find the angle between HHH and Orton to be enjoyable for what it is. Other people? Not so much. A buddy of mine told me he watched RAW for the first time in some nine years and couldn’t get past the first forty five minutes of the show. That’s when I told him about the whole Orton kicking people in the head, literally. First he laughed his ass off before realizing I was indeed being truthful. Even I know that having someone kick someone else in the head is kind of childish but after all WWE is now PG.

Also, I really like that fact that WWE has decided to break kayfabe and come out with the fact that HHH is indeed married to Stephanie McMahon. Sure, it kills the angle back in 2002 when they got a divorce and what not but who remembers that type of stuff? That really adds to the emotion of the angle and brings the whole family ordeal into it, which is great.

Anybody else strongly believe that John Cena will get into the World Championship match with Edge and Big Show? Not only is Edge versus Big Show uninteresting but Cena versus Edge versus Big Show is perhaps even worse. If it were to be a triple threat match, it will be a classic way of the baby face beating all the odds and whatnot, so Cena would have to go over. Which would really be the same crap that happened in 2005 between Cena and Edge. Edge loses the belt in short order and Cena goes on to have a lackluster reign. There is no way Show will win, he doesn’t draw. Edge can’t win since I think Orton needs to beat HHH at Mania. So, having two heels go over in two of the biggest matches on the card would leave a sour taste in the fans mouth. Even though I would love it.

Speaking of Wrestle Mania. Money in the bank is on the show. What a piece of crap that is looking to be. CM Punk, Kane, Finlay, Mark Henry, MVP and Shelton Benjamin are involved. Why the hell is Mark Henry in a spot fest? Finlay and Kane aren’t ideal choices either. Why not Brian Kendrick or Hurricane Helms? Those guys would put on a hell of a show with Punk, MVP and Benjamin. So much young talent that could be used for the match, but instead WWE decides to go with old, un able to move at a good rate workers. For some reason, I really believe that match could be the worse MITB in history.

Lastly, I’ve got to talk about Christian. A few weeks ago I was actually watching ECW and Christian came out. I completely marked out. Then I realized, I’m watching Christian on ECW. ECW?! Seriously. Even if the fans knew about Christian being the mystery guy for the Jeff Hardy attacks, who cares. It would have made so much sense and be perfect. Instead, Christian is feuding with Lispy. Well, Jack Swagger in case you didn’t know. Swagger has beaten Cage twice I believe. Way to kill Christian. He really should get drafted over to Smackdown where he can announce he was behind the whole thing and hired Matt Hardy to do it or something.

That’s all I got this time around.

Thanks for reading. Discuss if you wish.

Re: Wrestling Thoughts: Second Edition

Orton never beat HHH for the belt fairly. No real need to get into small technicalities in promos when an accurate enough blanket statement is far more impactful. Don't really see how kicking someone in the head is childish either, seems pretty realistic to me. My only problem with the punt is how long it supposedly takes people out. It would realistic for it to knock someone out or send them to hospital, but not to take them out for weeks or months. It may seem tame compared to, say Rikishi running Austin over, but that's hardly a fair comparison and is much better than something retarded like Samoa Joe walking around with a machete.

I've been saying ever since Monday that Cena will no doubt be in the title match, and it certainly seems that way. I can't really see either Show or Edge walking out of Wrestlemania with the title if that happens, unless they maybe go down the Edge "sneaky win" route again, which would be boring. And, sorry to be a nitpick, but it was 2006 the Edge/Cena fued was and Cena's reign was far from lacklustre, just booked uninspiringly. You want a lacklustre title reign look at any of Edge's.

I doubt the MITB will be good, but looking back I don't think any of the previous ones were that good either. Atleast this one will be different and hopefully standout more.

Christian on ECW was a perfect move. There was zero indication of him being behind the Hardy angle, that was all the internet hyping itself up into believing something and instead we got a really good Matt Hardy heel turn which makes way more sense. Christian is perfect for ECW: He's not a mid-carder, but he's not on the level of Cena, Edge, etc. Don't see how it's killed Christian at all when he's still insanely over, and had a insanely great match with Swagger the other week. I can see Christian on ECW being better than Christian in TNA ever was.

Re: Wrestling Thoughts: Second Edition

I really don't think Watts was a racist. He just had no concept of when to keep his mouth shut. At most, he was ignorant. The major difference between the two is that an ignorant person would push whomever he believed made money, regardless of race. A racist person would not push a certain race, even if they are an obvious money maker. The whole reason behind Watts giving Simmons the belt is because he knew a black man could draw. That may come off as being racist, but it's no different than the WWE knowing that Mysterio is a draw for Mexicans and Khali is an Indian draw. The thing about Simmons though, is that he just wasn't a main event level wrestler. Sure, he had the insane support from the fans when he won, but he isn't a guy you can base your company around. And that's the reason why his title reign was a flop. Even though people label him as a racist, it was right around the time of Watts firing that Simmons' push ended.
