This might seem a little far fetched and overly optimistic, but with the movie ''The Wrestler'' being such a success, could we see a renewed interest in wrestling over the coming months and years? RAW has been getting very impressive ratings the last couple of weeks, while TNA recently broke their ratings record with IMPACT getting a 1.3 (ok so its not much, but its progress). I am mainly talking about WWE and to a lesser extent TNA, although it must also be pointed out that ROH has made big strides recently with the TV deal and such. Quite a long time has passed now since the Attitude Era. Could we be about to experience another boom in wrestling?

I think we can answer this question in another 5 years when tna moves out of the impact zone, maybe.
As far as the wwe is concerned, 09 has been better than 07and 08 so far...
You also have to consider that the world's economy is pretty fucked right now, so I really can't see TNA growing much any time soon, nor can I see ROH progressing past their new deal for a long time. From what I read, WWE have had problems selling out arenas over the last three or so months too, so I'd say we won't see a "boom" until the economy is well and truly out of the shitter. Maybe when the economy booms, industries like the wrestling business will do so too, but I would be shocked to see a significant rise in popularity.

Steve is right, people cant afford to goo to wrestling right now. The one thing I can see increasing in the current climate is television ratings, more people are likely to stay in at the moment and while them people are in they need something to watch, although the PPV situation wont get any better for a while.
Also you cant really link The Wrestler film to any surge in buisness, in my opinion the film is about a guy who happens to be a wrestler(he could have played a rock start, a footballer or another form of entertainer) rather than a film about wrestling.

Because of two weeks of good ratings you think there's going to be a boom period? You're right, you're being way too optimistic.
Ratings always seem to increase quite substantially at this time of year for RAW, for obvious reasons.
Crocker makes a good point that ratings could stay up due to people staying in more in the current economic climate, but really I can't see it. Wrestling just isn't "cool" anymore.
I expect a downturn in ratings to the mid 3's by the end of April unless some sort of miracle happens.

Wrestling always goes through periods though. It may not be cool but it could be getting cooler to the average person, especially if kids keep coming in in masses.

Yeah wrestling isnt "cool" anymore. It's a shame cause no matter how old you were in the later 90's early 2000's you would love it. Now this PG rating BULLSHIT it making it for kids so it's "lame" for older people to watch it which is a shame cause wrestling is great given how the booking is

This "PG bullshit" made wrestling cool to everyone in the mid 80's. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.
People really need to get off this "TV-PG is killing the WWE" crap. Wrestling popularity started to drop long before the WWE resorted back to TV-PG.

I agree. But I believe the point that he's making is that WWE has strayed from keeping in touch with pop culture. In the eighties, it was all about Americana, and the era of the role model. The nineties, gave way to the era of the anti-hero.
The WWE had a hand on the pulse of where the pop culture switch was heading next, it was right around the time that the UFC was heading into the mainstream. Kurt Angle got white hot all over again, CM Pun-kenta got extremely white hot. Fans were dictating that they wanted a more realistic and athletic style of pro-wrestling. That's not what most got, they've turned away, which is what's resulting in wrestling not being as "hot" as it once was.
Vince wanted to run his company as he saw fit, and changed it's direction. Did it alienate some? Of course it did. Does that mean we won't see another wrestling boom? Naw. It just might take longer to reprogram the older fans into thinking the WWE is still cool domestically.
That being said, the WWE is still pulling ratings that most shows could only dream of getting; ratings that TNA would give their left nut for. Combine that with an international presence greater than most rock acts, the WWE is doing pretty well for themselves.
