This is something I have never quite understood in wrestling.
When people refer to the ''tweener'' role, what exactly do they mean?
I personally always thought a tweener was somebody who was neither face or heel AT ONE PARTICULAR TIME. For example, somebody who is neither a definite face nor a definite heel at that stage of their career, and as such attacks/feuds with both faces and heels. I had always accepted this to be the definition of a tweener.
I remember somebody else telling me that a tweener in fact means a wrestler who often switches between face and heel over the course of their career, which is quite different from what I thought it meant.
And also, I have heard that the tweener stage ALWAYS leads to a full turn, which I didn't believe to be the case either.
Someone clear this up for me, or discuss what a tweener means to you.
Some classic examples of tweeners would be good, too.

A tweener is a guy that shows both face AND heel qualities.
Example; Undertaker. He's never seemed like a face to me, always a tweener because he doesn't differeniate from attacking and talking trash on heels or faces, it seemed.

Yes, I have a GIF of two women kissing.
Yes, it's hot. Yes it's Megan Fox kissing another woman from Jennifer's Body. Yes, it's hot... owait, I already said that. Yes, I'm aware this makes me sound like a total lesbian. But this scene? UNF.

It depends on the time though. Undertaker during the last couple of years has seemed like a typical babyface to me. He only ever feuds with heels (with the exception of feuds like the Batista one, in which BATISTA was the one showing heelish qualities) and he is always the victim of cheating etc by his opponent.

From what I read online, a tweener is neither a bad guy or a good guy (an inbetweener), and sometimes called an anti-hero.
A great example IMO would be Stone Cold Steve Austin. We all seen him in the ring, stunning and flipping anyone like he gives a damn and the fans still cheer for him no matter what he does.

Yeah so Undertaker wouldn't be an example because he doesn't really do anything wrong.
I guess you could argue Triple H is the best example of a tweener right now.

I'd say that Austin was always a heel. It just so happened that he feuded with other heels at times. But even when he toned down the attitude, no one could trust him still. Not being trustworthy is a heel trait.
A tweener on the other hand is someone indifferent. Contrary to Austin, he doesn't lean to one side with his traits. He can also have plenty of allies. There's two kinds of tweeners:
The generic "I'm not worth a damn, so Vince *Or insert other booker* doesn't think I'm deserving of a status." That wrestler changes from heel to face depending on who he is facing. The important trait to have as a tweener is never being too heel like. At the end of the day, the fans still need to cheer for you against a strong heel.
The other is the in limbo heel or face. These typically roles do not last too long. Triple H after WM 22 (Before DX reunion) would be an example of this. He was having problems with the morality of the heels, but he wasn't sympathetic enough to care for the faces.

If that was the case, everyone not named Steamboat or Santana were tweeners. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

I'd say Tweeners are really a myth and that everyone can be pinned as to being a face or a heel, it's usually a lot more black and white than people make it out to be.

I'll say that Doom's definition is pretty much on the money...however given that WWE is a corporate entity, tweeners don't last long in wwe and in line with the first definition, has become more of a phase . as mentioned, Austin's character was toned down slightly after he became face. Another good example was during the period when cena went from heel rapper to face rapper (just before WM 20)

I'd pretty much go for that. Of course nothing is ever the definitive answer, but for me, Stone Cold behaving like a heel and giving stunners to faces and heels alike, but at the same time doing the "right" things (like saving Stephanie from the Corporate Ministry wedding) tells the crowd, he'll likely do right in the end, but not before he's done whatever the damn hell he likes

I agree. Like Batista, leading up to the Royal Rumble was a Face.
