The National Safety Council, which campaigned to get U.S. states to enforce seatbelt laws, is taking on cellphones, saying on Sunday it was starting a campaign to ban all use of mobile phones while driving. Even so-called hands-free devices should be banned, because studies show they do not make it any safer to talk on the telephone while driving, the group said. “It’s time to take the cellphone away,” said Janet Froetscher, president and chief executive officer of the non-profit group. “Studies show that driving while talking on a cellphone is extremely dangerous and puts drivers at a four times greater risk of a crash,” Froetscher said in a telephone interview.
Many states and Washington, D.C. have laws requiring the use of a hands-free device while driving and using a cellphone. But several recent studies have shown drivers are far more distracted when speaking on a mobile phone, even with a speaker or headset, than talking to a live passenger. Last month Dave Strayer of the University of Utah and colleagues demonstrated that drivers using a hands-free device drifted out of their lanes and missed exits more frequently than drivers talking to a passenger. Strayer’s team has also shown that drivers using mobile telephones are as impaired as drivers who are legally drunk. A study from the Harvard Center of Risk Analysis estimates that cellphone use while driving contributes to 6 percent of crashes. Froetscher’s group says that translates to 636,000 crashes, 330,000 injuries and 2,600 deaths in the United States each year.
I'm sort of torn on this, although I totally agree with it. I've been in the car multiple times, and people on cell phones almost crashed into me. For a lot of people it totally distracts them. The thing is I have talked in the car on my phone, and have to admit it certainly takes away from my driving skills. I sometimes get wrapped up into a conversation, and it certainly lowers my driving ability.
With that said there are a lot of things that take away from driving. Like load music, drinking coffee, hell i've seen someone read while driving.
Whats your opinion? Should this be passed or not? It's already passed in Massachusetts I believe.
Re: US safety group: Trying to ban cellphones in cars
Yeah, I think it should be passed.
Although I can talk on a cell phone with no problem while driving.
There are always some idiots out there who ruin things for everyone.

I can drive fine too, but come on driving with one hand impairs everyone.
I suppose.
It depends on where you are driving though too.
Driving in a congested city with lots of traffic, or a open country highway with very little traffic.
That makes a huge difference.

Re: US safety group: Trying to ban cellphones in cars
Definitely need to get rid of texting while driving, although unless a cop can actually see your cell phone screen, it would be hard to nail someone on that. They could simply be entering in info into their address book. As for cell phone use, at least making it so that your phone be 100% handsfree, but even then, there are alot of people that can't talk and walk, let alone those who can carry on a phone call and drive at the same time. I personally wouldn't have any problem with a ban on cell phone ussage in the car. My wife scares the shit out of me all the time when she takes a call in the car.
Re: US safety group: Trying to ban cellphones in cars
I'm torn on this too. I talk on the phone while driving a lot, but there are MANY people that can't do both at the same time. As for 100% hands free, I don't see why they should ban that. I mean, what's the difference from driving while talking on a headset versus driving while talking to the person in the passenger seat?
I have a bluetooth headset that works with my phone, and other than touching the button on the headset to answer and activate the bluetooth, everything else is voice activated. You take a hand off the wheel to answer a call just like you do to change the radio station dial. But they don't fine you for that.
I'd be in favor of a cell phone law that allowed people to only talk if they had a hands-free headset on (bluetooth or otherwise).
I can drive fine too, but come on driving with one hand impairs everyone.
I regularly drive with one hand, with or without a cell phone.
cuz thats how i roll
But I also have a hard time understanding how a law like this would even be enforceable. For instance, wouldn't people just put their phones on speakerphone? No cop would be able to tell if they were on the phone or not. There wouldn't even be the headset or anything. This is how I normally talk on my phone in the car anyway.
But really tho, this is the definition of having a one-track mind: not being able to even talk on a hands-free headset and drive at the same time. I don't see how that's any different from talking to a passenger, but if the studies shown in this article are actually scientific and accurate, then headsets somehow do affect the way people drive.

People are just weird.
Well driving with one hand, with the other head with the phone it. Your hand is covering one of the sides of you face. Clearly getting in the way of your driving. But yeah if you can't talk hand's free you probably a fucking idiot. I mean come on. How couldn't someone do that?
