Obama Likely to Close Guantanamo Bay as One of His First Acts
Quote:
President-elect Barack Obama is preparing to issue an executive order his first week in office — and perhaps his first day — to close the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, according to two presidential transition team advisers.
It's unlikely the detention facility at the Navy base in Cuba will be closed anytime soon. In an interview last weekend, Obama said it would be "a challenge" to close it even within the first 100 days of his administration.
But the order, which one adviser said could be issued as early as Jan. 20, would start the process of deciding what to do with the estimated 250 al-Qaida and Taliban suspects and potential witnesses who are being held there. Most have not been charged with a crime.
The Guantanamo directive would be one of a series of executive orders Obama is planning to issue shortly after he takes office next Tuesday, according to the two advisers. Also expected is an executive order about certain interrogation methods, but details were not immediately available Monday.

Pretty big move for his first action as President. Have to wonder what else he is closing down. I just hope he fixes the Economic state, as we all do...but that will take awhile.

They actually had a little protest at the university about this today, they had a few students sit down in Orange jump suits blind folded pretending they were Guitmo prisoners.
So I hope he follows through it's a shame on North America in general.

Kansasisians are going to be really pissed if this does go through, as it means most of the prisoners will be transferred to Fort Leavenworth.
I'm okay with Gitmo being closed. It's a black eye on the United States, and the acts that have gone on there (which have deliberately gone against the Geneva Convention) only further help the case to get it closed.
Re: Obama Likely to Close Guantanamo Bay as One of His First Acts
my problem with this is that he's going to close it down and MOVE it, not close it down for good or do anything about the human rights violations that go on there daily. That's just geography, not helping eliminate the disgusting acts of torture the US performs on a daily basis.

Where is he planning to move it to?
It would have to be somewhere not on U.S. soil because if they are in the U.S. the prisoners have rights.

You'd think that but I'm not sure. They really do seem to make up their own rules and somehow justify that the people there don't deserve the same rights a serial killer or rapist does here in the US.

The reason they had the prison at Guantanamo is because it wasn't on U.S. soil.
I think Obama's plan is to close it down and put them in the regular U.S. Criminal Justice system. If that is the case they will have rights.
