What qualifies someone as stupid? What qualifies you as smart?
People who do not inform themselves on the current issues facing the Nation and only vote either way because "their grandaddy would roll over in their grave" if they didn't.
We still have people in our country voting Democrat because their ancestors taught them that they would starve if a Republican was elected. Things directly related to the Great Depression which is 80 years in the past.
We have people that sells their vote for gravel for their driveway and a bottle of whiskey.
We have people that are told by their bosses how to vote and they do.
We have people who vote only because their parent/husband/wife tells them to vote and who to vote for.
We can never deny citizens the right to vote, but making it mandatory would be a step back I think.

I always thought it would be a good idea to have a little test at polling stations to see if you actually knew what was going on, just to get a feel of how much people actually know about the issues

I agree with this. A simple little test just to make sure people are at least informed enough to know what is going on.
Do you realize how easy it is for the biggest idiots in the nation to register to vote?
