As of now niether my wife or I have any credit cards. I really look at them as fake money, false promises and nothing but trouble. If you can't afford to buy it with your bank account, you can't afford it period.
So when you are buying furniture or a new bigscreen tv, what do you do? Write a check or pay cash?
Personally, I don't put anything on my credit card unless I HAVE to. I'm with Dak in that I hate knowing that at the end of the month, I am going to have a bill for $2k or whatever. I pay cash as much as possible, but for big ticket items, I'll use my credit card but then pay it off in full.
Re: Who is to blame for the financial position we're in?
It's all a result of good old-fashioned American greed.
People wanted bigger and nicer houses than they could reasonably afford. They couldn't afford with a standard fixed-rate mortgage, so they had to take out these ridiculous adjustable-rate mortgages, all because they couldn't bear to live in just a 2,000 sq. ft. house, they needed a 5,000 sq. ft. house.
Then, take into account the American public's ridiculous shopping habits and attitudes toward debt, which was already mentioned in this thread, and you've got the makings of a disaster. In fact, part of the reasons why people had to take out these ridiculous loans is because they had shitty credit to begin with, becuase of their out-of-control spending habits.
I'm sure there was some predatory lending involved, but I think that's less important than the idiocy of the American consumer

Well............
All my furinture was part of my credit card mess. We have had all the same furniture since 2003 when we moved into this house.
I bought my TV off the floor display at like 800 bucks off original price.
My car is a piece of shit, but its been paid for since 2005. My wifes car payment is under 350 a month.
I dont buy many new clothes, I dont go out to resturaunts alot. I dont buy shit I dont need.
Hrm....so yeah. We pay cash for everything. (by cash I mean my debit card) It's not easy, but it really keeps you from buying shit you "want" rather than shit you "need"
And yeah. I totally agree with Tom. Its about American greed. They go well above their means. I live in a really nice town, but my house is barely over 1000 sq ft, let alone 5,000. If I wanted a 5K sq ft house I could have spent the same money I did for my current house and bought one in the next town over.

I'm with Jay on this one as well. My wife and I racked up a ton of debt similar to DD, same situation. Bought all our furniture, tv etc... on credit cards. The whole here/now mentality is what's fucking up this country altogether. There's no patience, people MUST have everything this instant.
I also am coming out of a debt whole on the positive side now, and I only put dire emergencies or large ticket items on the two and only two credit cards I own.
Like Daniel said, if I can't afford right now, I don't need it.

Re: Who is to blame for the financial position we're in?
I've had two credit cards for over 10 years each, and I got a 3rd about a year ago (a JetBlue card so I could get some free flights from the air miles I was accumulating).
I've paid each card in full every single month. I don't spend beyond my means, and I have zero debt and excellent credit. My fiancee has pretty good credit, but a great job that pays very well. I also get paid well. When I buy a house/apartment in the next 6-12 months, I will be in great shape. Mortgage originators need to lend to SOMEONE to make money, and I'm about as low-risk an option as they have.

The AMEX I use for big ticket electronic items like my big screen TV or the iMac because the warranty is doubled. I also like their customer service. I don't get concierge service, but they're nice to me.
The Discover I use for school items, as I get 5% cash back on tuition and books that I pay for with it. I also put monthly expenses, like my cable, internet, phone, electric and crap on it. I do this because I just like it that way.
The 2 Chase, the Chase CC & the Dell really have no use, but I keep them open for the credit history.
Re: Who is to blame for the financial position we're in?
Wait wait wait.. the American consumers are retarded, but this is news? Credit cards and the like have been out of control for years.. People ages 18-24 have been in debt since I've known what debt is..
So now, we are going to blame these morons because the idiots at your local bank thought it was a good idea to give these kinds of people loans that they should have known were never going to be payed?
