I don't really consider this a sports thread as its so much more than that and doesn't fit into North America or UK Sports.
I'm watching the opening ceremonies right now. Very impressive stuff. They're using over 15,000 performers and while I don't understand a lot of their symbolism, the stuff they're doing is amazing. It was weird watching Bush sitting and laughing with Putin like they're old college buddies.
What are you looking forward to if anything? I'll be keeping an eye on basketball, track and field, and maybe some boxing, wrestling, and what not.

Re: Olympics 2008 in Beijing
The opening ceremony was gold itself. Pure brilliance. Much like a post from Dak.
As for the games, my main love is the ol' track n field, where we used to excel, but don't much anymore.
Which brings me to one of our main sources of success, the velodrome. I'm not a cycling fan per se, but the velodrome cycling at the Olympics is exciting. This and one day at the track n field are the ones I want to get tickets for in 2012.
Other than that, the soccer may be fun, but I don't really go for the sports at the Olympics (such as Basketball, Football, Tennis) where the Olympics is not really the major thang.
The Olympics is the only time that I have any time for sport. And strangely enough I will watch any and every sport. Case in point today, I watched badminton and then gymnastics. I just get caught up in it all, always have since Barcelona in 92.
I do enjoy the athletics, swimming and gymnastics most though.
