Okay, Ive just had a chat with Jayman and it took me forever to explain something to him cause in my descriptions of the words he didnt get, I kept using more and more words that didnt cross the language barrier between the US and the UK. Words that arent even slang to me, were lost on him, such as posh.
Any words or phrases anyone wants explaining?? From either side of the Atlantic.

Re: The Language Barrier
Mmmm, I've been to America quite a lot, and been on this board since 1815 (not the time, the year) so tend to know when I'm typing how I have to phrase something so as not to complely mindf*** (Jay's phrase) my little yankee doodles.
That and I talk real slow and real deliberate so their feeble minds can cope!
Okay, that's me. Now I'm off to the bathroom (toilet) to color (colour) in my favourite (favorite) cheque (check) book.

Re: The Language Barrier
um, I do believe that Jayman is what we should consider an exception. Generally speaking, we (Americans) can at least comprehend British...dialect. I really don't think there's much of a language barrier between the US and UK. We recognize accents and things being spelled differently, but come on, "language barrier"? Nay.
I recognize different spellings Assassin, that wasn't the questions in point. There are just some phrases used that we don't have over here, which was the basis for Giggly's thread.
And now, here it is...your moment of Carlin (12/4/2008)
Catholics -- which I was until I reached an age of reason -- Cathloics and other Christians are against abortions, and they're against homosexuals. Well, who has less abortions than homosexuals? Here's an entire class of citizens guaranteed never to have an abortion, and the Cathloics and Christians are just tossin' them aside. You'd think they'd be natural allies.
And I don't think, you see the places inside me that I find you,
And I don't know, how we separate the lies here from the truth,
And I don't know, how we woke up one day somehow thought we knew,
Exactly what we're supposed to do.
So leave me, at the Roadside,
And hang me, up and out to dry,
And now, here it is...your moment of Carlin (12/4/2008)

Yes, and that recognition of different spellings was my attempt at de-emphasizing any claim of a language barrier. I wasn't suggesting that you didn't recognize different spellings, just the opposite actually.

...were you under the impression that I didn't understand what the basis for this thread is? I said you were an exception because, even conceding that there are phrases exclusive to the UK, most Americans can still hold a conversation with, and fully understand, someone from the UK. We may recognize certain phrases as uncommon, but we will still know what they mean most of the time.
