Flip flops are fine. I just bought a pair of reef flip flops and they are awesome (a little pricey though $38) What do you flip flop haters wear to the beach? Sneakers? Sandals? If you wear sandals, why would that be acceptable over flip flops? And if you wear sneakers you're a tool!

My wife wears them constantly and tries to get me to get some.

I don't like how they look, feel, etc.

I guess it's in how I was raised as my Dad always told me that slackers and hippies wear flip flops...
