Have you ever dealt with someone who has an eating disorder?

I eat a lot. Like way too much. But I'm still pretty skinny. In fact, this thread is actually not about me. Instead about a girl I know. A large group of us went to the bar, and I'm talking to one of my female friends. She kind of spits out, "Isn't it weird that I don't like to eat when I know I'm going to go out so I can get drunk faster?"

I was appalled. I don't even know how to put it. It was like she wanted us to be proud of the fact that she didn't eat all day. Sadly, she was dead serious. Of course, I was mildly buzzed at the time, so I confronted her about it, and offered to buy her a burger. I think she almost slapped me.

I'm actually seriously concerned though. Should I actually care? Do you think she was just trying to impress me?

Erin, lets just get married now. You don't seem to have any of this drama. Or you at least don't tell your friends here at MonksDiner about it.

Re: Have you ever dealt with someone who has an eating disorder?

Screw eating disorders, I love food. It's fantastic. There will be days I don't eat anything at all, but it has nothing to do with trying to lose weight or prove anything. It boils down to the fact I absolutly hate going grocery shopping, and most of the time can't actually be bothered to make food.

I have not gone grocery shopping in about 2 weeks, and am pretty much out of food. So today I had half a sleeve of crackers for dinner, but couldn't actually be bothered to like... make a sandwich. I'm so pathetic.

I have had friends with body image issues, but no real eating disorders to the point it became an issue that I had to step in. It's tough, because so much of the time the girls are just screaming for approval, and that approval generally has to come from a guy. No matter how many times I tell a girl she is skinny, it means nothing untill a particular boy tells her she is pretty. And at that point it could go either way. Some girls will be satified with that, but some girls will take it as a sign to go further and eat less. It's tough. I used to have some body image issues, and still freak out if a dress makes me look big or something along those lines, but it is generally just something I have come to accept. I have the exact same body as every single woman on my mom's side of the family, except I am the only one that didn't get a chest. Frustrating yes, but not something I can really do anything about. Except wear padded bras when I feel like being hit on by strangers at a bar.

Re: Have you ever dealt with someone who has an eating disorder?

Ino, your friend sounds like she has a drinking problem more than anything, or an attention complex.

I've known girls who have had eating disorders, and it's sad that in each of their cases their popularity has skyrocketed due to their losing weight.

Also, my girlfriend has been incredibly tall (6-foot) and thin all her life, to the point where she's been accused of having eating disorders since she was 11 or 12. Now I know first-hand that she eats like a horse, but it's sad when we go out for dinner with friends and she's afraid to leave the table to go use the bathroom because others might think she's going to throw up.

Re: Have you ever dealt with someone who has an eating disorder?

Terry, this doesn't sound to me like an eating disorder. In fact, if she were worried about her weight, then why would she be consuming endless amounts of alcohol?

It sounds to me like she likes being drunk in which case, maybe it's a drinking problem or maybe she needs alcohol to feel comfortable in the setting, or possibly.. she wants to have an excuse why she slept with some dude.

Re: Have you ever dealt with someone who has an eating disorder?

ya dude my friends mom had an eating disorder, she was all "ima eat den throw it up k" and she went and got help at a doctor place... but that didn't really help her cause she still does it, but she is best friends with my mom so my mom told her straight up how it's gonna be, basically, i'm guessing thats what you need to do, just tell her that she will die if she doesn't eat, not too mention it is completely unattractive... (hence gods pic)

speaking of which.. i was at the gym and this skinny ass girl was bragging about how she never eats and how she hates food and how she is sooo happy she is skinny, and all the girls were all envious and shit.... now... i don't mean to take away from Ino's topic but someone please care to explain

Re: Have you ever dealt with someone who has an eating disorder?

I have one friend who's bulimic and another who's anorexic and it pisses me off like hell. Especially when I read pro-ana sites that one of my friends has got into - they're absolutely sick. When I hear someone saying 'omg your collar bone looks amazing', I want to punch them.
Yeah I sympathise with the people who have the disorder, but when they start encouraging other people, it's just disgusting.

Also, I'm like Erin. Food is amazing.
