I was listening to a podcast today and one of the hosts said that the Internet was the most important advancement ever made in the history of mankind.
Would you agree?
I'm really in a debate with myself. There were advancements that were necessary for society to "advance" in order for us to get to where we are now. Without them, the building blocks for the internet would never have existed. But then, the internet has COMPLETELY changed the world as we know it.
Also I would put Television, Automobiles, Telephones and the good ole Microwave oven above the internet.
The internet is pretty freaking sweet though, but its not a necessity by any means.

I was thinking that Automobiles were definitely more important. I agree in the Microwave too -- it's a pretty freaking cool device.
The reason why I don't rank television or the telephone up there is because that they both can be replaced by the internet. I know, the internet runs on the same infrastructure as the telephone or cable television, but lets ignore that.

There'll be no sorrow there, no more burdens to bear,
No more sickness, no more pain, no more parting over there;
And forever I will be with the One who died for me,
What a day, glorious day that will be.
The argument could be made that those are two of the most detrimental inventions ever...

How about the radio? I would say that, back in the early 20th century when that became popular, it was a MAJOR communication tool, entertainment tool, and a way to get all the news you needed to know.
The "Fireside chats" of FDR, Little Orphan Annie for the kiddies, a source of getting music out to the public. It's still something we use to this day, and I would bet it will be around for a long, long time.
Before the days of CNN and 24-hour news television, this was how people got all their information. News on the war, what was going on in the country...all these things wouldn't have been possible without the radio.
My belief is that, even if the internet has more options available and is capable of much more than radio...ask yourself this: How many people on this planet have access to the internet (not as high as you think) versus the amount of people who have access to a radio?
The argument could be made that those are two of the most detrimental inventions ever...
There are millions of AIDS patients and starving children in Africa who would disagree with you
