Can you admit when someone of the same sex is good looking?

Background story: There's 2 gay guys in the same department I work. Along with 2 gays, there's 4 ladies, 2 of whom are pregnant, and then 3 straight guys including myself. Or 2 more gays that are in closet, and 1 straight guy. You get it... there's 2 gay guys!

Anyhow, I mentioned something about how someone was a pretty good looking guy, and I was like, "Yo gay guy number 1, you'd agree, right?"

And he did. Afterward, one of the straight guys was like, "Dude just admit you're gay!"

I'm not gay. But I'm not at all a homophobe either. I have no problem with gay people. Do I get grossed out when I think about the thought of two guys kissing? Hell yeah. But the two I work with are cool, and understand where the societal limits are. Or so it seems. Maybe I've just made it rather obvious that the last thing I want to hear about is them doing anything with another guy.

After the other "straight" guy called me gay, I openly asked if he could ever say another guy was good looking. And I pointed out there's a total difference between being attracted to someone, and thinking they're good looking. Of course he just straight up refused, and said he could never even consider another guy good looking. I don't see how this can exist -- I think even subconsciously we indiscriminately rate other people. I'm probably not going to hang out with someone that looks like a scrub.

I would never say that another man good looking.

One of the major reasons is what happened to you, even though you didn't mean it that way.

Some people are really weird about stuff like that.

Interesting you brought this up. In my Race Class & Gender class today we had a gay speaker. He said that the ones who are homophobic and call them names are often hiding gay feelings themselves...

I agree completely, Terry. I don't want to hang out with scrubby looking dudes, I want them to dress well and present themselves in an appropriate manner, and I can certainly admit a guy is good looking without it being some kind of attraction.. For example, Justin Timberlake. Or.. Joba Chamberlain.. That guy's real hot!

Of course, I'm not interested in guys in that way in the slightest, and haven't ever had thoughts of it either. But if you were to ask me if there are guys I think are good looking, I'd say yeah.

I'd list some examples, but that might be crossing the line.

I tell guys they are good looking all the time, it's no big deal to me. The idea of doing anything with another guy is completely disgusting to me so I know I'm straight so to me it's no big deal to tell another man he's good looking.

I do all the time. If my friend is looking hot, I tell her so. By no means am I attracted to women, but I can recognize when someone is good looking. Though I suppose it is different for girls.

I openly call guys good-looking, hot or whatever. Doesn't mean I'm attracted to them.

It really frustrates me when immature people who aren't comfortable enough with their sexuality then say "Haha! You're such a fag!" or whatever. Although that doesn't happen me very often to be fair.

Pretty much my thoughts on this are covered by, girls openly call other girls good-looking etc and it's accepted so why can't guys compliment other guys?
