MESA, Ariz. -- A school policy banning student hugging prompted dozens of east Valley students to protest with a giant group hug across the street from campus.
"I think it's ridiculous," said Chelsea Branham, a 14-year-old student at Shepherd Junior High School in east Mesa.
Branham said she got detention this week for hugging her friend after school.
"It's not like it's supposed to mean anything," she said. "It's not like I was making out with him or something."
Branham joined her classmates on Friday for a 20-minute, public hug-a-thon.
"She's taking a stand and I'm standing behind her to do it," said Stephanie Wiegold, her mother.
The "no-hugging" rule had previously been in the student handbook. After many students began expressing concern about public hugging and kissing in the hallways, the school began reinforcing the guideline by punishing huggers, which led to Friday's protest.
Prior to the demonstration, the district said the principal and students brokered an agreement to clarify the "no-hugging" rule. According to the guidelines, small hugs, less than two seconds, are permitted but longer ones and kissing are not.
"We can only hug two seconds? That's ridiculous," Branham said. "It's barely even a hug."
"What we're doing here is hoping to help kids understand what's happening," said Kathy Bareiss of Mesa public schools.
The district said a list of acceptable and non-acceptable behaviors will be handed out to students on Monday.

wait are you saying Magic Johnson is black, has AIDS and has it better than ME?
I don't see this as being a bad move. I used it as a cheap way to get a feel. Still do, actually. And when you're in high school, how many people do you legitimately hug? Sure, there are the rare occasions, when someone has a really troubling circumstance, but that rarely comes about.

I disagree. I understand the "cheap feel" tactic as I've utilized it in the past and even on occasion to this day. However, a hug is a common greeting amongst a guy and a girl whom are friends comparable to slapping hands with your mates. You know how weird it would be if all of a sudden I had to greet my female companions by slapping hands? Talk about uncomfortable. What is the school trying to accomplish by implementing this rule? It sounds to me like an underhanded way of promoting abstinence, in which I'm not a fan. Our society cannot continue to run away from these issues. Intense and graphic sexual education is the only way to handle pregnancy and std prevention.
There'll be no sorrow there, no more burdens to bear,
No more sickness, no more pain, no more parting over there;
And forever I will be with the One who died for me,
What a day, glorious day that will be.
A "20-minute, public hug-a-thon" in protest? Across the street from school?
Easiest solution I can think of is to draw straws and have the losers engage in unprotected anal sex outside the principal's office. BAM, hugging doesn't look so bad anymore.
How insane. To me, when two people hug, it's usually consenting between the two individuals. How often do two people hug where one of them doesn't want it at all? 2% of the time, maybe?
Kids these days are becoming too sheltered. They can't play dodgeball anymore because it can "single someone out". Same with playing tag. Fu**ing tag. Soon everything will be banned in schools, and kids will just sit on a bench at recess and just look at the sky.
Sorry, I digress from the original post, but everything in general about children is becoming insane.

Especially teaching kids that everyone is a winner by giving everyone trophies...
I digressed too. Sorry.
