Tipping

So just how generous are you with tipping those who live off them? I'm talking about waitstaff, hairstylists, valets, whatever...

Do you just tip a straight amount no matter what the service? 15%, 10%, 20%, other?

Or maybe it depends on the service you get. Maybe you'll leave a few bucks if the service is bad, or nothing at all? Or even worse, a few pennies.

Discuss, you tight-wad.

I tip well at restaurants no matter what. I tend to go out to eat a lot, and as a repeat visitor I prefer that everyone touching my food is happy.

This is something me and my gf argue about everytime we go out to eat.

She is one who no matter what will tip 20% or 15 %, w/e the right amount is, i forget at the moment. But the way I see it is you should tip on how good your service is. If they suck, I wouldnt say give them a penny or something like that, but $2? maybe $5 idk. But if they are really good, give them $10 or $15.

Of course it also depends on how much your bill is. If you go out and your bill is like $80, then a $5 tip would be horrible lol. So idk, I guess it just depends on where you are and how the service is.

For me it's usually anywhere between 15-20%. I have a rule for what constitutes a great waiter/waitress: if you can bring me another drink (non-alcoholic) before I get done with the first one, WITHOUT ASKING ME, you are an excellent waiter/tress.

Unfortunately it's a lost art. Last night our waitress saw me sipping on an empty glass of water, came over and asked me if I wanted another one.

After a shindig with some of the people I did TSLRP with, we went to this fancy restaurant, you want a good waiter? 35 people, never wrote down the order. When it came time to dish out the food, didn't ask where each plate belonged. He knew. Didn't ask what you had to drink for refills, and refilled plenty. My biggest thing is if they're polite. If they go above and beyond the call, I'll leave extra.

I forget which restaurant I went to last month, but the person to take our order informed us that it is the places's policy to have every waiter help at every table so that if a patron needs anything they can ask anyone on staff. I thought it was a good policy.
