Re: Tipping

Around here, if I go up to the bar myself and all the bartender has to do is fill my glass with draught beer, he's probably only getting whatever change is left over from my fiver. And I think that's pretty common.

That said, the times I've been to Montreal, I know it's absolutely essential to tip even your bartender 15-20%, or else you simply won't get served for the rest of the night.

Re: Tipping

The bartenders around here seem to have it as hard or harder than the waitresses do, so I tip them accordingly..

Re: Tipping

I rarely go someplace where you tip someone. IMO, they should be tipped if they do a great job. If they do a bad job or only what they have to (i.e. a medicore job), they don't deserve a tip.

Freak, is that true about Montreal? If I didn't tip and they refused to serve me after, I would raise hell since refusing service just because a patron doesn't tip doesn't seem right.

Re: Tipping

There are a lot of unwritten rules/laws in Montreal, and everyone just obeys them. If you tried to put up a stink, you'd just get laughed out of the joint.

Re: Tipping

We dont tend to tip in the UK, although now Im wondering where HB eats if he tips.

I dont know why. When I was in the States, at first I didnt even understand the concept of tipping and would have probably pissed off a few people off until I learnt that you should do it.

Re: Tipping

When I tip, it depends on the bills. I never spend more than $35 for food, because I hit up the 99's with my gf or Friendly's. I'm not into fancy/expensive restaurants. I like my food simple and inexpensive, but good. For a $35 bill I'd leave between $5 and $8, as long as they did their job good. If they were over the top amazing, then I'd be happy to leave a much better tip. If they sucked ass then a couple bucks. But as far as tipping goes, the only reason it's expected at restaurants so much is because they make like 1/2 of minimum wage or so. In MA. they make about $4.15 and minimum wage is $7.50. Their livelyhood is their tips.

Re: Tipping

I'm an over tipper. I end up tipping way too much. I don't really care though. If they are real good I don't mind over tipping. I only go to restaurants once in a blue moon, so I make it a good tip.

Isn't the point of your minimum wage to set, like, a... minimum... wage?

America is so weird sometimes.

There are some jobs like this though and they have the opportunity to make much more than minimum wage.

If they are good at their job, they make more than minimum wage.

I'm a good old rebel,
Now thats just what I am,
And for this Yankee nation,
I do not give a damn.
I'm glad we fought against her,
I only wish we'd won.
I ain't asking any pardon for anything we've done.

Re: Tipping

Then doesn't that provide a loophole for any employer who wants to determine wage by "commission"?
