Dressing like a Teenager?

It's no secret that I like to wear clothes from American Eagle, Abercrombie & Fitch, etc.. It's not a brand name thing, I just like the clothes. I also wear some athletic jerseys every now and then or whatever.. I have lots of options.

However, I'm talking to this dude the other day.. a fairly successful businessman and he tells me that if I'm going to be taken seriously I might want to stop "dressing like a teenager" and advance my outfits.

Now.. I'm 24-years old now, but I could probably pass for being 19.. everyone seems to think so. I understand that maybe what I wear isn't exactly "professional" but I didn't think it was that bad. Personally, I'm more into marketing & sales and I relate to young people a hell of a lot better than I do someone who is damn near 40 or 50. I'm not an idiot. My GPA is pretty damn decent I think, and furthermore, I have opinions on almost anything. I love to read and I love to form opinions, I love to educate myself. What's the problem here?

I don't see a problem with wearing whatever you want really on your time.

If you have the opportunity to meet someone who could help you get a job later or something, you may want to dress a little more professional.

The guy has a point. You are judged by what you wear in business becasue it is run primarily by an old guard who carry traditional values of appearance and conduct. And since htis is also what is taught to new students, it keeps on rolling.

Well first off, having a good GPA doesn't mean you aren't dumb. There are 'book smarts' and 'street smarts'.

That aside, I think it's fine to wear A&F type clothes if you're lounging around the house or whatever, but I'm 25 and I wouldn't wear those type of clothes out in public much. Probably for that reason: I don't want to give off the impression that I'm in high school or college anymore. During the week it seems I'm always in work clothes, since I usually do a bunch of shopping and other random things around the town while still in slacks and a nice button-up.

It's just a matter of personal taste, really. If you're looking to get noticed by women who are around your age, and aren't having much luck, you might want to rethink your wardrobe.

But if all is good on the woman front, then who cares?

Well yeah.. that's not really an issue. I'm still in college by the way. If I dressed like I was 35-40 I don't think I'd get as many looks but again.. I don't look 24, I look younger.

My point was more about in the work place. I have no idea how I should dress in a work place. Right now I wear A&F button-ups and shit because I work in an office at a college.

I wear American Eagle just because it seems to be pretty popular.

I really have no fashion sense what so ever.

I would be just as happy wearing a flannel shirt and cheap jeans.
