Or do you just walk through and not even care? Do you say Thank You after your given something? Or do you act like it's about time you got it? Is Respect earned? Or should it just be unconditionally given?

I dont think it has to be earned, If you just met someone show some respect to him, but knowing someone for awhile and they dont deserve respect then dont give it to them.

I have to say that most people here was raised to behave in that manner and West Virginians are often praised as beeing really nice by visitors from other states. Don't get me wrong, we have our share of bad apples as well but there are a lot of nice people here. I give everyone respect until they show me that they don't deserve any respect. Even then I will just try to avoid that person and not disrepect them.

I think it's a bit weird if you hold it for someone who's a fair distance away. That person then feels the need to speed up a bit. I'll always offer my bus seat to people who are less able than me to stand, and I always make a point of thanking workers in shops, cafes or restaurants. When I worked at Maccies, it used to piss me off royally if people didn't say Hi to me or thank you. Those people were getting a large box with four fries in it.

Our library is 10 floors, and the higher up you go, the quieter the study areas are supposted to be. So the first few floors is group work, then quiet study, and then the top 3 floors are supposted to be silent study. I don't even mind if people have a quick exchange, or talk really quietly. There seems to have been a recent trend of just picking up your cellphone and having a full out conversation well the people right beside you are trying to study. Have some courtesy, go into the hallway that is 15 steps away. I usually will glare them into submission, whilst considering stabbing them with a pencil.
