Re: Calif. fires burn 1,200 structures

Well, I'm right in the middle of it all. I live in the PB neighborhood, and is one of the few that's safe because i'm so close to the ocean. It's pretty crazy here, but still not as bad as the 2003 fire where there was so much ash in the air that you couldn't go out without burning your eyes.

A few friends had to evacuate their houses, and they all came and crashed at my house. It was like an unexpected dinner party.

San Diego and lot's of Southern California burns easily because it's very very dry here, and there's lots of dry, dead, brushes. These cities are pretty much built on desert lands - deserts that grow vegetation once a year (for two weeks it gets very lush here) but end up with dry, flammable material for the rest of the year.

No school for the kids, and no work for the grownups for a week is not too bad. But yeah, you've really got to feel for those who lost their homes.

Re: Calif. fires burn 1,200 structures

The irony is, when people live in these areas hit by natural disasters, they don't move.. they just keep rebuilding. All those people that loose their houses in CA with the fires... chances are they will rebuild right in the same place. Next year, there will be more fires like this, and they will be right back in the same boat. Same with the southern folks getting slammed by hurricanes and flooding. You would think being in something like that one time would be enough!

Here's a news clip for those that haven't seen them:

THANK YOU! I do not understand that. Last year, the county I lived in flooded for the first time in 20 years. Lots of people lost everything. But you know what?! The city also zoned worst hit areas as unlivable! They tore down the houses and condos. How is it that these places that are hit year after year and are rebuilt time and time again?

Officials blamed a wildfire that consumed more than 38,000 acres and destroyed 21 homes last week on a boy playing with matches, and said they would ask a prosecutor to consider the case.

The boy, whose name and age were not released, admitted to sparking the fire on Oct. 21, Los Angeles County sheriff's Sgt. Diane Hecht said Tuesday. Ferocious winds helped it quickly spread.

"He admitted to playing with matches and accidentally starting the fire," Hecht said in a statement.

The boy was released to his parents, and the case will be presented to the district attorney's office, Hecht said. It was not clear if he had been arrested or cited by detectives.

The fire began in an area near Agua Dulce and quickly spread. It was among 15 or so major wildfires that destroyed some 2,100 homes and blackened 809 square miles from Los Angeles to the Mexican border last week. Seven deaths were blamed directly on the fires, six evacuees died of natural causes and one person died of a fall.

Authorities arrested five people for arson during that period, but none have been linked to any of the major blazes.

So a kid started that? I imagine he wont be playing with matches anytime soon...
