I have a triend and tested trick for this (works best late at night, when traffic is quiet). Stand next to a crossing with some traffic lights. Once you see a cab coming press the button for the crossing - the lights turn red, and the cab HAS to stop, meaning he's more likely to give you a ride. Thank god for that last weekend, otherwise it would have taken me 2 hours to walk home.
