Monks US Meet Up....it's going to bloody happen!

Okay, I've been pressured into trying to make this happen. It clearly won't, the logistics are so out of wack, and nobody in the US seems to have any spare cash to travel(!).....however, one time only, I'm going to try and take this bull by the horns since, strangely, I'm quite keen to get over Stateside again and kick some yankee doodle dandys square in the nutsacks.

Soooooo, with this in mind..........all I want from anybody at this stage is the following -

Serious suggestions for a venue. NYC is most popular since it would hav eto encompass a couple of days at least for it to be worthwhile, and no fucker in their right mind is flying out to West Virginia for two days of unbridled unadulterated Dak-time. It doesn't have to be in NYC, but please bear in mind, if you live somewhere that (a) doesn't appeal to out of towners or (b) has just you on here living within a 200 mile radius......it's not going to be your hometown! Personally, I would be happy with any of Toronto, Seattle, Washington, LA, Florida

Date for meeting. What I'm after more here is dates you definitely cannot do, but only IF, you are seriously interested that is. So if you really want this, but there's no chance in hell of it before Christmas and after April next year, let me know that you're basically free January to March for bookings!

So all I'm asking for here is the following only if you are seriously interested -

1 or 2 venues that would be good for you
Any periods where it would be impossible for you

I'm going to keep this for North American members at this stage. For those of us overseas, we'll just work around whatever is (or isn't) arranged. If this does get off the floor, do not be surprised that I shall ask for proof of those of you interested having booked flights/travel or accomodation. The only reason I will do so (in PM form) will be that there will be no interest from overseas until firm commitment has been made over there, but that is much further down the line so don't worry about it yet.

Personally, I can't ever see this happening (as has been said many times) but I'm just going to try and inject some positivity and organisation to it before we all get so old (particularly me) that this will frankly never happen.....which would be quite sad I think. Some of you I've know three or four years now on here, so a meet would be a mother of all weekends.

It's up to you guys.

How funny is it that the Americans are so lazy on this board that they need a bloke to organize it?

I will most likely not do it period unless its in NYC or Boston. Just being honest. I also dont want it to really be in Boston because then I would feel like the honorary tour guide.

I could only do it if it were on the weekend of course, which I think would be the general consensus for everyone here.

I have been looking at some flight/hotel package deals at Travelocity and they are not really that expensive. They start at around $550 round trip from Pittsburgh. Of course if this really is going to happen I would have to know what airport I need to fly into and what part of the city to stay in.

So let's hear it people! What's the verdict?

If you're flying into NY, keep in mind that JFK is the larger of the two airports and easier to get to Manhattan via public transportation. If you take a cab from JFK theres a flat fee (I think it's $45) to anywhere in Manhattan. Taking a cab from LaGuardia is probably cheaper.

As for neighborhoods to stay in/avoid, you should avoid the Bronx and Staten ISland at all costs (The Bronx because it's really bad there and Staten Island because it's like a million miles away). Anywhere in Manhattan below 96th St. is fine, but there are a few small pockets of bad areas. For Queens and Brooklyn, it depends where exactly the hotel is...both boroughs have good areas and bad areas.

One of these days, I'm gonna take a look at what dates are definitely not good for me...

I seriously would be interested in a Monks Meet-up, but here are my restrictions:

I would also like it to be in NYC, which seems to be a common consensus. Short of Cooperstown (Baseball Hall of Fame), I've never stayed anywhere in New York for a long period of time. Seattle is on the other side of the friggin country, and I just don't feel like flying that far. Toronto could be fun to go to again, but only in the summer. NYC is my choice, with Boston in second.

As far as times..I really wouldn't be able to pull this off until the summertime as I have classes basically from here until April (w/ a short holiday break). Besides, it would be more convienent to hang around downtown New York without fifteen layers of clothes on. Honestly, the months of May - August would be best for me.

I would be fine with New York, as it's only a 5 hour drive for me if that. Spring time would be best, but I'll see what everyone else says and work with whatever dates are thrown out there. And yes, it would have to be a weekend thing. Perhaps meetup on Friday Night, head home Sunday.

I live an hour and a half from Boston, and about 4 from NYC, so if im free, either one of those would be fine.
