Relaxation Techniques

I was sitting here at my desk trying to get rid of a major migraine and it occurred to me how many relaxation methods are out there (beyond meds). Also, I generally try to avoid drugs as a find it’s too easy to pop something in your mouth and get hooked on the relief it gives you. I’ve seen too many relatives get hooked to different pills and such that it’s made me quite paranoid.

I find it difficult to relax while at work as I am answering phones are dealing with agitated nurses most of the day so I attempt one of two methods:

1. Walking outside and finding a park. I try to find the quietest bench with a calming view and empty my thoughts for a good 15 minutes.

2. Putting a nature sounds CD in my computer and closing my eyes for a few minutes to calm myself.

These may sound corny to some of you and don’t always do the trick but it works for me most of the time to calm headaches stress, etc.

Let’s here some other ways out there…

Re: Relaxation Techniques

If I'm stressed out to the point where I'm starting to lose my rag, I make a whole bunch of noise. Slam a door, throw something about, primal screaming. Anything to work it out of my system sometimes seems to do the trick. After that, I calm down a lot.

As for medication, I know what you mean. I try not to take it for other reasons, though. I sometimes suffer with a bad back, and don't like to take pain killers for that, as the pain goes away, and I think I'm Superman. I then try to do something I shouldn't, like carry a heavy box, and I'm screwed again!

Re: Relaxation Techniques

Usually if I'm stressed I just smoke a cigarette. I know its not healthy but it releases teh stress most of the time.

Re: Relaxation Techniques

When I'm really stressed out, I want to just be alone. Sometimes, for me, the worst thing to try is to talk to me about it. I just need time to cool off by myself. Usually I'll go and surf the web, or watch tv (if I'm at home). Anything that will get my mind off the current situation usually helps. That way I can come back in a few minutes with a clear head and properly diagnose the situation.

How did I know that would be your answer?

For me I just usually try to take myself out of the situation that is stressing me. Sometimes that means watching some t.v., surfing the net, listening to some music, or just going outside and taking a walk.

I'm glad we fought against her,
I only wish we'd won.
I ain't asking any pardon for anything we've done.

That's exactly the same for me. Except no one realizes this at the time, like say, my gf! She does nothing but want to talk it out. I tell her no and she gets pissed. then the situation grows to a war

Re: Relaxation Techniques

i get a burnt CD with Roy Jones Jr., Metallica and DMX . drive out on the snow, and find places to get some air(not much because it can't go that high or fast) or find powder listening to the music and get away from everyone. everytime i hear "Entersnadman" and "You Know my Kind" i headbang and throw a devil horn in the air or rock side to side a lot looking for a hill to find some air or find flat ground to see how far i can go on one ski.

If you know you're not living for God with all your heart, Praying might not be the best answer because you will become a target for the smallest things. but if you are a following God wholeheartedly, then Praying is the best answer. put on a worship CD and let go, worship and let him create and open doors and close doors for you.

my other option is play music and play sports video games, or Tiger Woods. when your putting it really takes your mind off a lot of things. or any video game that gets your full attention. such as high speed racing games. Midnight clubUB edition did that for me. when your driving a tuner Motercycle you really have to be on your A game. the Harley moto's are fun to use the hand brake and sly sly slippedy slide. )85( is driving and the computer be saying, "who DAT drive?"

Age of mythology and Age of Empires 3:The War chiefs can be a way to forget about stress when the game really gets rolling but not at the start when your just building up.

sometimes making banners is like meditatiing because i can get lost in my thoughts thinking about stuff. i might be staring at the screen but I'm thinking about at a lot fo things while just sitting there.

during Gym nights i would go the the free throw line and just starting thinking not keeping track of how many went in juts go back and forth thinking about nothing to pass the time waiting for the next pick up game.

when i was in detention sometimes and i had no home work to do, i would bring a piece of paper along with a sports mag and go through the pages finding a good pick and start drawing because i can't create anything good with my imagination, i have to have something to look at. kind of like pyro, he can't create the fire he can only manipulate it. my two favorite drawinf were of Carter doing a 360 one handed jam, and one of Bruce Bowen when i was in Nuiqsut detention, his face didn't look like Bowen but more like Stephon Marbury.

when i was younger my mom bought me and my sister a game boy and all he was Tetris, i played that game for hours just watching that screen and listening to that music that was playing in the background.

Re: Relaxation Techniques

Whenever I need to relax it always involves being in the dark. Whether it's lying on my bed listening to my iPod, watching TV, or going for a walk, it has to be in the dark. I find darkness/night time more peaceful.

Re: Relaxation Techniques

Gotta agree with The first and last post in this thread.

Nature sounds, being around nature, and darkness..It's soothing. One really nice one is the sound of running water. Sure, it's got its downs like making you have to take a piss..but that just makes it all the more relaxing, am I right?
