Explain Affect/Effect to me
I'm trying to write a blog for MonksDiner and I'm totally stuck on the effect/affect thing. My English major friend has been trying to explain it to me over IM, but things are not going well.

Me: affect/effect
Me: why do I not understand the differences between the two?
Him: lol
Him: affect is when something affects you
Him: effect is like a special effect
Me: The internet however, with ease, has effected everything.
Me: it would be affected, right?
Me: rather than effected
Him: yes
Me: so affected is more of like influencing something to happen
Him: yes
Me: and effect is more of a result of what has happened
Me: i guess
Me: fuck!
Me: they both seem the same still
Him: no
Him: effect isnt
Him: effect is like
Him: "oh look at those sweet effects"
Him: wheras.... affect would be more like
Him: "that smoking really affected my health"
Him: get it?
Me: i don't think i'm made to get it

Me: effects = more of a detail

I think I understand all the other ones, but dude, affect/effect just escapes me. It seems like there's overlapping situations where either one can be used.

If you type what you want to post in Word, or another grammer correcting word processor, does it fix which version to use? I thought i knew the different, but after using the define:word search in Google... I have no idea...

Yeah, DD's explained it well there.

To affect is a verb (a doing word). An effect is the result.

So the internet has affected everything. (the internet has done something to everything).
The effect (result) is that everything relies on the internet.
