Wow, I'm probably going to be the most unwelcome person in this thread.. You asked, so here are my thoughts:
I'll start by saying this: I am a avid hunter. I would hunt every day if I didn't have to support my family by working... I enjoy it that much, however I do hunt for sport, but never kill anything I won't eat, or donate to less fortunate people that can't afford "meat".
Turkey Hunting - Turkeys are extremely intelligent bird. This makes hunting them very exciting, because as compared to animals of less intellect, they can see and hear you coming most times before you know they are near.
Deer Hunting - (My Favorite BTW) I have hunted every year, for about the last ten years. Although I own several guns, I prefer to hunt with a bow. Just about anyone can stand in a tree stand, in the middle of a field, or top of a knoll and pick off a deer that is grazing 100 yards away (Provided they are a decent shot), but to hunt deer with a bow, there is a whole science to it. Deer are colorblind, which helps a little bit when it comes to not being seen, but deer have a keen sense of smell and hearing. When hunting deer, you have to be camouflaged, descented, and quite. Compared to using a gun, typical shooting range for a deer with a bow is about 20 yard, although it's not unheard of to be capable of shooting one at 40 yards with a bow. The reason I enjoy deer hunting so much is, unlike turkey hunting, you typically can see or hear a deer coming. This means, while you are set, waiting for the deer to come into view, you can take some time to relax and enjoy the scenery. Being in the woods is quite peaceful, especially when you have children at home

.
Then, when the deer approaches, your adrenaline starts to rush, you get butterflies in your stomach... it's quite exciting. Deer makes great Jerky, burger, steaks, etc.... and you get alot in return from your kill. Where I hunt, the farmer that owns the property is very poor, so poor, he cannot even afford to farm his land. 1/2 of every deer I harvest, I process the meat and give to him and his father. I am keeping the population down, and feeding myself and others when I deer hunt.
Fox hunting - I'm not a big fan of fox hunting or trapping. I think you are a little wrong thinking that the dogs always get the fox. I haven't fox hunted, but y understanding is the dogs simply chase the fox and corner it in a tree, or inside a log, and the hunter is the one that kills it. I don't know of many dogs that are fast enough or smart enough to actually catch a fox. But this part of hunting as I said, I am not familiar with. I don't think foxes or other animals should be hunted solely for the pelts, furs, etc....
Bear Hunting - This is something I haven't done yet, but I will one day. The same as with hunting deer, only far more dangerous, and again, for the sport and for the food. If I participate in bear hunting, and find that I don't enjoy eating bear, then that will be my last time. Like deer, the bear population needs to be controlled, so I have no problem with people hunting either of these species of animals as long as the remains go to feeding someone.
Whales, seals, lions, and all those exotic species... I'm not knowledgeable enough to know about what is actually hunted for food, but I can imagine in particular, whales, and seals are hunted solely for thier blubber / fat / tusks... which is not necessary. Lions, gazelle, etc down in Africa... I believe most people are hunting them strictly for sport and to showcase thier "trophy" to thier buddies. Unless there is a population issue, I don't think it's right to hunt them, of course unless it's for food, as I mentioned before.
As far if you agree or disagree with hunters, think about this:
If it weren't for hunters, you, the non hunter would have no state parks, no reservoirs, no natural resources to use at your free will. The revenue generated by licensing fees go directly to the US fish and wildlife service, and are apportioned to the US states. Did you know, the income taxes YOU pay, only cover 10% of the necessary funds to help support wildlife conservation, hunter education, natural resources, state forest, etc! 10%! A minuscule amount is provided through private donations, however hunter licensing fees cover the REST... that right. I, and every other hunter out there, pay for all of you NON HUNTERS to enjoy those resources. So remember, it's ok to not agree with hunting, but please, never tell a hunter he has no right to do what he does. Without hunters, our natural resources would disappear, animal population would overcome the human population in a matter of years (10-20 years!). There would be huge amounts of personal property damage (cars, homes, etc) and more attacks on man because the animals would have no areas for themselves / be over populated...
Wow, I got off on some kinda tangent... didn't mean to get all into posting a sermon...
Anyway, I guess you get my point of view. Whether you agree or not, the only bad hunter is a uneducated hunter, or one who does not obey the laws.
