| Re: Great Ancient Civilizations It all really depends; The Greeks and The Romans are the clear leaders though. The Romans, under Augustus was an absolutely dominant civilization. They won with just shear numbers, but they had outstanding technology, outstanding defense mechanisms, and they had the infrastructure to support a war. They were able to replenish their soldiers much easier than their enemies which made them particularly successful.
Greece however was quite the power house too though, just at a different time. While I don't think they ever had the numbers or the organization that Rome had, they were able to defend themselves quite well.
I would take the organization, and military tacts of Augustus over anyone though ... except for maybe George McClelland. Give me McClelland planning things out with my boy Ulysses S. Grant in the battle field directing it, and it'd be unstoppable. |
