Harper's motion — which states that "this House recognizes that Québécois form a nation within a united Canada — was prompted to diffuse a Bloc Québécois motion to be debated Thursday. The Bloc motion calls for Quebec to be recognized as a nation but does not include the words "in Canada."

Harper said the issue of Quebec's nationhood should not be decided by the federal government but by the Quebec legislation. However, he said the Bloc has forced the government to take a position.

"The Bloc Québécois has asked us to define this, and perhaps that's a good thing because it reminds us that all Canadians have a say in the future of this country," Harper said.

The Tories had earlier said they will oppose the Bloc motion. Some Liberals had said they'll support it because they believe it merely states the obvious.

But others warned that it was too vague and open to interpretation.

Harper said the intent of the Bloc motion is clear: "It's not to recognize what Quebecers are, but what sovereigntists would like them to be.

"For the Bloc, it's not a matter of Quebec as a nation — the National Assembly has already pronounced itself on that. It's about separation. For them, 'nation' means 'separation."
I remeber this almost happened before years ago, but the votes voted in Favor of NO. I say let them go and lets move on with our lives; The British hate France, We hate Quebec....BIG DEAL!!! Why is it so important to have them in our country?

Wait, they would be a nation but not independant of Canada? So they would want to be like the United Kingdom, several "countries" part of 1 real country?

Yeah but they still want to use our mint and healthcare and all that. Basically they want special privledge because they are French. They will fall flat on their asses.

I would be all for it, but it's not fair to the Maritimes who would suffer majorly from it.

They want their way paid, ie. collecting the cheque but have a nation of their own! They should be like their ancestors and go freaking colonize in the over 1,000 islands in the Pacific! I wouldn't miss them to be honest.

No, they just want more independence. I'm taking post-confederation Canada right now, and all we ever talk about is how Quebec is constantly complaining. We gave them bilingualism, what more do they want.

The problem I have is that their complaints go directly against the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which is what makes Canada so great. It declares all citizens are equal, and will be given equal rights. So why should Quebec be given special rights? Even they can't seem to form a concrete answer, beyond the fact they are a different culture. So is the rest of Canada!

We need another Trudeau-esque PM in a bad way. Trudeau never put up with their shit.
