Israeli aircraft have fired rockets at the runways of Beirut's international airport, forcing its closure and the diversion of flights.
The attack comes as 27 civilians were killed in overnight Israeli raids on southern Lebanon.
Militant group Hezbollah says it has fired rockets into northern Israel. One person has been reported killed.
The violence follows the capture of two Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah. Israel has said it holds Lebanon responsible.
The Beirut airport is Lebanon's only international airport.
It is located in the Lebanese capital's Hezbollah-controlled southern suburbs.
Shortly after Israeli shells began falling on the runways, a senior airport official announced the facility was closed and asked scheduled flights to divert to Cyprus.
There were no immediate reports of casualties at the airport.
Bridges destroyed
Israeli PM Ehud Olmert said the soldiers' capture was an "act of war", but Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah insisted the two would only be returned via talks.
Mr Olmert said he held Beirut responsible, but Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora denied any knowledge of the Hezbollah operation and refused to take responsibility for the soldiers' capture.
Before targeting the airport, Israel launched night air strikes on bridges and roads in southern Lebanon. Many bridges were destroyed.
The BBC's Kim Ghattas in Beirut says it is the first time in a decade that Beirut airport had been hit by Israeli fire.
The airport, rebuilt after the civil war, is a symbol of national pride for the people of Lebanon, our correspondent adds.

Israel continues to get away with whatever they want, we bankroll it, and all their enemies are our own and nobody understands anything.

Anything written by a bbc journalist is scewed away from the Israeli point of view so I suggest looking into this deeper before commenting (which I know Miakal would have done anyway). The way I look at the middle-eastern conflict now is this, there is NO concession that Israel can make that will appease the situation other than removing themselves entirley from the middle-east (of even the planet in the current hyper-militant Muslim view of many radicals) so Israel cannot exist until it completely cleanses the middle-east of Islam.
Therefor the only way these conflicts will end is when either Judiasm or Islam wipes the other faith from the face of the earth. Seeing as both Jews and Muslims are fully integrated into virtually every country in the world this conflict will not cease until armageddon (funnily enough foretold by both the deep sea scrolls and the Q'ran). So you'll be happy to know these fockers are bringing us all to some kind of hell.
I hope the United States continues to support Israel and I have no problem with what Israel is doing right now.

Israel has tking shit from these fuckers forever.. So I really have no problem with it.. I'm just lookeing at the bigger picute. If I wasn;t so drunk, I'd be able to ecxplain more but basically, I think we are getting very close to WWIII here..
I think the sooner Iran gets a nuclear weapon the quicker peace will come to the region. Hiroshima heralded the longest period of world peace and stability as all thining nations realised that nuclear holocaust was the single thing that not one person on the planet wanted to witness. I think as soon as Iran and Israel witness it they'll suddenly have a hell of a lot more respect for each other.
I don't think it's going to be that easy.. Damn, my fucking head is killing me. Anyway, I don't think it's going to be that easy. I don't see us, the United States, doing nothing about a nuclear attack on Israel. Everyone would be calling for that countrie's head, and we'd deliver it for them.. And with that, eveything else would follow like a stack of dominos.. There's no easy way around it.
As far as Israel and the situations they are in right now, I hear a lot of people, especially those of France bitching about the actions taken over the last few days and all I have to say is FUCK THEM. Israel has taken enough shit, the government of Lebennon has no control, so what are they supposed to do? There is no negotiating.. I think Senator McCain said it best when he said Israel has no other choice because it's not a matter of these cells wanting something.. other then Israel's demise that is.. That's all they want. They don;t want Israel to exist in any fashion no matter what they are given, so fuck it.. Let Israel bomb them to hell.

That is not true at all. Warshave been fought constantly since the invention ofthe A Bomb. The COld War was only Cold because the US and USSR never fired at eachother but the wars in Korea, Afghanistan, Vietnam, the Yom Kippur War were all bred from superpower relations derived from suspictions over the A Bomb.
The last thing the Middle East needs right now is a nuke, especially in an Arab state. A nuclear bomb dropped in Tel Aviv would drag the world into the biggest shit storm known to man.
As for the Isreal situation, the BBC is so pro Arba that eventhe UK Government is holding enquiries into its broadcasting over the Gaza withdrawal. Israel I feel are totally vindicated in this attack and like I mentioned earlier in another thread just because Israel seem paranoid doesn't mean that there aren't countries out there willing to drive them into the see at a moments notice.

Perhaps I should have said wars in which superpowers used their full potential. I am well aware of the many silent wars and proxy wars that took place. However as you gathered I was meaning full overt warefare using the most destructive force possible. The nuclear diterant was enough to keep the soviet union and the USA from going to war fully with each other for the best part of half a century.
