Immigrant Boycott

Quote:
Latin American immigrant groups in the United States have called for a major one day strike and school boycott as part of a campaign for immigration reform.

The May Day protest is intended to show the impact of their contribution to the US economy and many companies that rely on low wage labour fear their operations will be hit.
There are signs of division within the community however as some groups fear the disruption could turn the US public against their cause.

There are an estimated 11.5 million illegal immigrants in the United States and there have been huge street protests in recent weeks against proposals by some lawmakers to make illegal entry a crime.
Hispanic groups, who want measures to give undocumented workers a legal status, are urging supporters not to go to work, keep children away from school and not to make purchases.

"We've unequivocally called on all families to participate in the Great American Boycott and the marches -- and that translates into not going to work, not going to school, not shopping and not selling," said Nativo Lopez, president of the Mexican-American Political Association, one of the main organizers.
Hollywood stars, including Edward James Olmos, Salma Hayek, and Argentine composer Gustavo Santaolalla, who won an Oscar this year for the score to "Brokeback Mountain", are supporting the protest.
Food giants such as Tyson Food Inc. and Cargill Foods said they would close about 20 plants between them on Monday. Goya Foods announced a complete halt to daily distribution.
All three companies said they understood the sentiments behind the protest. "We share many of the same concerns about some of the proposals in Washington," said Cargill spokesman Mark Klein.
The House of Representatives passed a bill in December which would make illegal entry a crime. The Senate is still struggling to overcome divisions to agree legislation.
President George W. Bush favours a law which would set up a "guest" worker status and open the way to citizenship but also step up border security.
Demonstrations in Washington, Los Angeles and other major cities in recent weeks have each drawn hundreds of thousands of people.
But there are worries about signs of more radical protests.
The "We Are America" coalition -- which includes the Roman Catholic Church -- and Hispanic politicians are encouraging people to work normally and join demonstrations later in the day.
The US Hispanic Chamber of Commerce has told workers to get consent from their employers for a day off or risk being fired.
Wal-Mart, which employs more than 1.3 million people, including many Hispanics, also warned that employees should ask permission before staying away.
Leading unions, such as the AFL-CIO, say they back the strike and will join planned protest rallies. But the United Farm Workers' Union urged members to participate in the rally after work, to avoid being fired.
California is likely to be one of the most affected states and its Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has denounced the boycott, though California's Democrat-dominated state Senate approved a resolution supporting it.
President Bush has criticized the strike. "I'm not a supporter of boycotts. I'm a supporter of comprehensive immigration," Bush said last week.
And in a sign of the mounting tensions over immigration he has also criticised a Spanish version of the US national anthem, which was written by a British songwriter.
Bush urged immigrants to learn English so they can sing the original version of the song.
May Day is a normal working day in the United States, which marks a Labor Day holiday in September.
This is getting to be pathetic. They're going to boycott because of that fact that the USA is planning on cutting down on illegal immigration? Get a clue. I wish there was a way to load up all the boycotters into a truck and ship 'em back to wherever they came from.

I don't mind legal immigrants. All of us came from somewhere. It's these pathetic illegal ones who want the world handed to them that I hate.

I agree 100%. I have nothing against legal immigrants, it's the illegal ones I don't like. They aren't even legally supposed to be in this country and now they are complaining about not getting all these benefits and now they want to boycott?

I doubt enough people will actually participate to make any difference.

Asking to work at Dunkin Donuts and live in an apartment with 10 relatives is absolutely asking too much. They should all take no initiative in life and stay in their third world countries. Fuck you illegal immigrants.

I live in Texas so I witness the ignorance of the immigrants first hand every day. I've grown up with kids since kidergarten who's parents still can't speak english. I graduated last year. I really don't care if they came illegally or not just so long as they came willing to learn our language and obey our laws.
