A DISTRAUGHT teenage girl hit out last night after a thuggish soldier who beat her to a pulp was let off jail.

Gemma Gregerson, 19, was battered after refusing to have sex with Paratrooper Andrew Campbell.

The brute — an Army boxer — smashed her jaw, cheekbones and eye sockets, leaving her unconscious and barely recognisable.

But despite being shown the appalling pictures of her injuries, a judge just FINED Campbell, 26.

Gemma, who spent four nights in hospital following the vicious attack in May 2004, said: “That man is an animal and deserves to rot in jail for what he did.

“There’s no way that is justice. He could have killed me. I can’t believe he wasn’t sent to prison.

“When I saw what the judge had given him I just broke down in tears. My life has been turned upside down by what happened to me. I am scared to go out.�

Campbell, who serves with the 3rd Battalion Parachute Regiment in Colchester, Essex, attacked Gemma after she refused to perform a sex act on him in his car.

She had fallen out with her boyfriend after a night out — and Scots-born Campbell offered her a lift home to West Mersea, Essex, as she went to find a cab.

Gemma said: “This guy just pulled up. I know it was a stupid thing to do but he seemed OK and I decided to go.

“But during the journey he kept asking me to touch his manhood. I was horrified and I kept refusing.

“When we got back to the lane where I live I remember getting out of the car. He got out too and we were just standing there.

“The next thing I remember is waking up in my bed in agony at about 6am.

“I looked in the mirror and when I saw my face I was horrified. I can’t remember anything about the attack.

“He must have knocked me unconscious straight away. I have no idea how I got to bed.�

Gemma’s mum Victoria said: “Her face was a complete mess. I couldn’t believe what that monster had done to my daughter.

“It is disgusting that he has been allowed his freedom.�

Married Campbell, from Irvine, Ayrshire, was arrested five months after the attack. Gemma had been able to give a good description of him — and police received a tip-off after posting the details all around the Army garrison town Colchester.

Campbell admitted the sickening attack at police interviews but pleaded not guilty when he appeared before magistrates.

He changed his plea to guilty at Chelmsford Crown Court — but walked free last week after Recorder Elaine Willers fined him £1,200 and ordered him to pay the same amount to Gemma in compensation.

A police source said: “We’re disgusted at the outcome. Nobody can understand why the judge didn’t lock him up and throw away the key.

“She told Campbell she did not want to send him to jail because it would mean the end of his Army career.

“What he did to Gemma was absolutely horrifying.

“A powerfully-built paratrooper and a teenage girl is no contest at all. It was the worst kind of thuggery.�

In fact Campbell WILL be booted out of the Army in disgrace within days, military sources told The Sun.

He will be shamed by a dishonourable discharge as soon as court papers come through to his battalion.

His CO has already barred him from going on a mission to southern Afghanistan with the rest of 3 Para in a few weeks.

A senior Para source said: “We simply don’t want scum like this wearing the maroon beret. He has lost any right to it. Beating up a woman is unforgivable.�





Officially, an MoD spokesman would only say: “Further action will be decided by the soldier’s chain of command. We do not wish to speculate at this stage.�

TWO Queen’s guardsmen who viciously beat up a young man near Windsor Castle were spared jail yesterday after a judge heard they were being sent to serve in Iraq.
Grenadier Guards Jack Mizon, 21, and Daniel McCarthy, 24, punched, kicked and stamped on Simon Anderson, 24, after they were thrown out of a bar.

The pair were each ordered to do 240 hours’ community service and pay £2,000 compensation.
