Police: Fla. Man's Bed Set On Fire While He Slept

POSTED: 6:19 pm EST March 27, 2006

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Police said that an argument between two residents of a boarding home led to one man being burned over 90 percent of his body, according to WPLG-TV in Miami.

Investigators said Ilya Goligorski shared a room with another man in a home at 417 S.W. 12th Court.

Early Monday morning, police said that the man poured a flammable liquid on Goligorski's bed and set it on fire. Goligorski, 55, was sleeping in the bed, caught fire and ran from the building in flames, WPLG-TV reported.

"He was trying to put it out," witness Jessica Ruiz said. "First thing I thought was to get my cell phone. When I came back out he was gone, but he was covered."

James Miller, a resident at the home, told WPLG-TV reporter Roger Lohse that the two men had been arguing for several days. Police said they were called to the home on Saturday night to break up a fight between the men.

Police said that the suspect was angry with Goligorski for "being lazy" because he was going to work every day while Goligorski was not.

"Something was used to ignite him," Fort Lauderdale police spokeswoman Kathy Collins said.

Goligorski has second-degree burns over 90 percent of his body. He is being treated in the burn unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Police said the suspect had a bag packed and fled the scene.

The name of the suspect has not been released.
