former Zachry Construction executive committed suicide today — the same week he was fired for sending an e-mail to a city councilwoman deemed "very racial and very discriminatory."

54-year-old George Dickerson, an executive with the San Antonio based global engineering and construction firm Zachry Construction Corporation, committed suicide today, after an angry e-mail he sent to his city council member complaining about a night club in his neighborhood was leaked to the media and prompted Zachry to fire him for unauthorized use of the company's e-mail system.

On Monday night, Dickerson sent San Antonio City Councilwoman Elena Guajardo an e-mail complaining about activities at Graham Central Station, a controversial night spot across Fredericksburg Road from his upscale northwest San Antonio neighborhood.

But what raised eyebrows were comments Dickerson made in his e-mail which referred to the customers of the nightclub as 'undesirable, low class elements from bad parts of the city (who come into) our upper class part of the city for which we pay a very large tax burden in which to live to be safe and be away from such elements.'

Eight minutes after sending Guajardo the e-mail, Dickerson sent her another e-mail saying 'the previous e-mail transmitted regarding the Graham Central Station is to be considered compleely confidential and not for public distribution.'

Guajardo said the e-mail was racist and contacted Zachry. The e-mail was sent from Dickerson's official Zachry e-mail account.

Wednesday, after learning about the e-mails, Zachry fired Dickerson for violating the company's computer use policy.

This morning, police were called to Dickerson's home where they found Dickerson dead from a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

"He stated that he had been fired from work after working at the same place for 27 years and was very depressed," a police report said.

"He left a suicide letter with a will on the top of a desk before taking his own life."

Zachry released a statement saying the company is 'deeply saddened to learn of George's death. The thoughts and prayers of the Zachry family are with George's family." And added, "we regret that this matter became public and evolved into a personal tragedy."

Councilwoman Guajardo declined comment, saying her 'thoughts are with his family.'

Yeah but why did he lose his job? It just said that he violated computer use policies. What policies could that have been. The policy that they probably used to fire him was more than likely something about racism. So by just being accused of making a racist comment this guy lost his job of 27 years.

I am sure he was upset that he lost his job. That is the point. He lost his job of 27 years because he was ACCUSED of making a racist comment. No investigations, no warnings, no mercy. That is a bit harsh for someone who has worked for a company for 27 years.
