Bush Accepts Responsibility for Katrina

WASHINGTON - President Bush said Tuesday that "I take responsibility" for failures in dealing with Hurricane Katrina and said the disaster raised broader questions about the government's ability to respond to natural disasters as well as terror attacks. "Katrina exposed serious problems in our response capability at all levels of government," Bush said at joint White House news conference with the president of Iraq.

I have to say two things: I was right and I'm proud of the President.

Now that they've admitted there was some mistakes made maybe the media will focus less on that and more on the relief effort itself and how people are helping/can help.

No more blame game please. Leave that up to a review when the time comes.

Bush is capable of admitting mistakes when they are made. I'm glad he didn't just play the aloof game.

It's better if the President takes an active role in what happened. Blaming himself and dumping the guy from FEMA (though...Bush just made him resign) was a good way to do that, I think.

Say what you will about Bush he seems like a hands on kind of president and willing to take responsibility when errors are made.

That is what a leader should do.

Yeah, but if you don't point the finger and you have an idiot in charge (I'm talking about Michael Brown) then many people are going to die in the process.

Or you can say hey, let's not worry about who did what and I will take responsibility for all. Let's move forward and help these people.

Bush is doing this now....I am sure the inquiry into all this will reveal what went wrong and where.

And yes I agree Brown seemed like a bad fit for the position.

Well, initially the Bush administration was blaming the local and state governments.

Michael Brown had absolutely no idea what he was doing and needed to step down. Thankfully he did.

He's riding Arabian horses as we speak.

But my point is that you needed to point the finger at him. Clearly he mucked up so badly that he was really putting the rescue effort in danger.

I'm not so confident in the inquiry myself. Ask John F. Kennedy or the victims of 9/11 how those things go. It's pure politics on both sides and neither will give in too much about what they did wrong.

Hopefully, much of the inquiry, now that Bush has accepted blame, will be focused on how to do better next time rather then trying to destroy the image of certain politicians.
