A world with out "Cash"

With Credit Cards and debit cards being used more and more, should we eventually get rid of cash all together? Would that be piratical?

It can have it's uses. Your buddy just spent his last $20 on a BJ from the town whore and needs $5 to get a coffee, you can just give him the 5 bucks, but how could you do that with debit or with out cash? Will technology evolve to the point where it will be simpler than we can imagine? Is this a possible and probable way of the future?

I say yes. What say you?

I think there will always be a need for at least some form of currency. Debit and credit cards are fine for when you need to buy something from a store, but what about between two individual people?

What happens when I say to my friend, "I bet you twenty bucks I can dunk a basketball?" and we make a bet and I need to pay? Or, a friend comes over to my house and says "I'll give you 5 bucks for that old CD you never listen to any more. I doubt it'll ever get to the point that we have credit card machines in our own houses.

There has to be a way for there to be little transactions like that, and cash serves as a convenient way to do so. So unless we devise a way to easily transfer funds between two individuals, I dont see cash going away

Well with technology and how fast it is advancing, it would be easy to transfer a money transaction by beaming from one device to another like you can do with PDA's now. Finger print verification and transatcion complete.

Might sound far fetched now but I am sure that is what people thought when they imagined buying something from your bank account with a piece of plastic.

I can totally imagine it, I dont think it sounds "far fetched" at all.

Especially with the fact EVERYONE has mobile phones nowadays. There could be some kind of instant transaction service on a mobile phone or pocket organiser, if you owe your friend £5 you just open up the mobile and send it to his account.

There could also be automatic transaction services, like you walk into a shop, go up to the paypoint and your mobile phone or whatever will pick up on the shop's bank ID y'know, and you just press a button.

It could totally happen.

Give it time

Conveinancy, technology, the future, it all scares me.

Especially when it comes to jobs. There will no doubt be some kind of system that leaves out shop assistants, there will be no checkouts, it will be an automated system.

Its just one more thing that will lead to an incredible lack of jobs. Any kind of supermarket or clothes shop or food shop will need 1 or 2 people to run it, just to stock it and keep it looking nice. People will be able to just walk into a shop, pick up some jeans, press a button and walk out.

Im going completely off topic but its the same deal as the great factory work era that had employed so many people and kept smooth running economies everywhere, now being destroyed by machines.

Give it time

All those checkouts and clerks and stuff will get jobs as hookers.

To be fair and to also go off topic, there is no way humans could do what is done on a mass level in most factories today. Have you ever watched that show. How'd they do that? Lol.

On topic...

Just look how much people use their debit cards now? If a store I go into doesn't have debit, I walk out and go somewhere else and am pissed. They lost a customer. How about when you have like $19.34 in your account and need to get your $20 because you need it and the bank is closed and the place has no debit? a real pisser isn't it?
